Providence Aims to Translate Strengths to Postseason Success
October 1, 2026 by Eli Cloutier/CHN Reporter Providence was a buzzsaw in the regular season last year. The Friars waltzed to a 23-9-2 record and the program’s first outright Hockey East regular-season title. Entering the postseason, Providence was ranked fifth in the nation. Then came the Hockey East Tournament. As the top seed in the conference, the Friars hosted Merrimack in the quarterfinal, but fell 3-2 in overtime. Then came the NCAA Tournament.
Jeff Hamilton has never coached in college. Now, he’s tasked with rebuilding Yale
Jeff Hamilton in front of a portrait of Tim Taylor. (Yale Athletics) Every year, Keith McCullough and a group of his best friends, more specifically, his former teammates at Yale, take a trip to Ireland to golf. Jeff Hamilton plans that trip. Hamilton plans the entire trip down to its tee times. He creates a Ryder Cup-like format — team match play. Every year, Hamilton is the captain of his team, and every year, his team wins.
How Sam Lee overcame a broken hand to make the U.S. NTDP
Sam Lee broke out with 32 points for Belmont Hill this winter. (Brian Kelly/NEHJ) Sam Lee still had to wear a plastic cast on his right hand. It had only been five weeks since he broke it. Now he was back, facing Little Caesars, the top-ranked 15U AAA team in the country. On his first shift back, he scored. Later in the game, he blocked a shot with that same right hand. “You’re obviously a little worried about it, just going into contact,” Lee said.
‘His ceiling is limitless’: Inside Jack Queally’s path to the NTDP
Jack Queally led St. Sebastian's with 37 points this season. (Brian Kelly/NEHJ) Jack Queally wasn’t surprised when he scored in the first game at the U.S. National Team Development Program Evaluation Camp in March. “There was never really any doubt in my mind,” he said. Queally was one of 45 players born in 2010 in Plymouth, Mich., that week competing for a spot on the NTDP’s Under-17 team. Scoring early let him settle into the moment — and into himself.
The Steamroller Hit a Bump, But Wasn't Stopped
March 29, 2026 Michigan Staves Off Late UMD Charge to Return to Frozen Four by Eli Cloutier/CHN Reporter See all of CHN's Tournament coverage: articles, brackets, history and more. ALBANY, N.Y. Five periods into the NCAA Tournament, Michigan looked as if it was going to walk to the Frozen Four. The Wolverines took care of business against Bentley on Friday, 5-1, and held a commanding 3-0 lead after the second period on Sunday against Minnesota-Duluth.

March 28, 2026 After Tough NCAA Exit, An Opportunity to Reflect by Eli Cloutier/CHN Reporter See all of CHN's Tournament coverage: articles, brackets, history and more. ALBANY, N.Y. Matt DiMarsico broke his stick over the crossbar. Reese Laubach slammed his on the boards as he skated back to the bench. In what was surely his final collegiate game, Gavin McKenna dropped to a knee, watching Minnesota Duluth celebrate shutting the door on Penn State.
Albany Practice Day Notebook
March 26, 2026 by Eli Cloutier/CHN Reporter See all of CHN's Tournament coverage: articles, brackets, history and more. ALBANY, N.Y. There’s long been debate about neutral sites for NCAA Tournament regionals, and at MVP Arena, it’s no different. It’s crowded here in Albany, with four teams sharing a single hallway, and as a result, the conditions aren’t ideal — even if Minnesota-Duluth senior captain Joey Pierce praised MVP Arena’s pleasant exterior.
How Blackstone Valley united a community en route to a championship
Colin Dorgan (left) and head coach Chris Librizzi embrace after the championship. (Chip De Lorenzo) Blackstone Valley had prepared for this. Lincoln tended to overcommit, so when Declan St. Vincent won a face-off back to Caden Rudek in the offensive zone, Jaxon Boyes made himself an outlet. There, Boyes stood wide open in the slot. The puck found his stick, and with the weight of a community on his shoulders, he delivered. Blackstone Valley 3, Lincoln 2.

STORRS, Conn. — One by one, they skated over to Mikahil Yegorov, who stood frozen in his crease, and offered an embrace. When Cole Hutson was finished hugging his goaltender, he skated away, dropping his hands to his knees, and looked out across the ice after what was surely his final NCAA game. Cole Eiserman found Hutson. The two best friends embraced, shedding tears. They may never play on the same team again.

One down, three to go. BU lives to see another day after a 4-1 victory over Vermont in the first round of the Hockey East tournament, but the Terriers’ road to a conference title and an automatic NCAA Tournament bid only gets tougher from here. A lot tougher. And the way BU played at Agganis Arena on Wednesday night isn’t a strong indicator that the Terriers will have success moving forward.
The Boston Hockey Blog
The Hockey East tournament means way more for BU this season than it ever has under fourth-year head coach Jay Pandolfo. The Terriers are playing for their lives. With the regular season in the rearview mirror, BU sits at 16-16-2 and 24th in the NPI — well below the cutline for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Starting with a first-round matchup against Vermont, BU must win Hockey East to qualify for NCAAs. BU’s season is over if it doesn’t win four games in a row from here on out.
How Blackstone Valley has tried to move on after R.I. rink shooting
A memorial set up outside Dennis Lynch Arena on Feb. 17. (Boston Globe/Getty Images) It was senior night — the final home game at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, R.I., for the seniors on the Blackstone Valley Schools boys’ hockey team. Coach Chris Librizzi remembers shaking hands with the nine seniors on the team and giving them a big hug. After the game, the plan was to hop over to The Guild, a beer hall less than a half mile from the rink, to celebrate the graduating class.
Top 5 in the home stretch
Here are the latest Rhode Island boys high school hockey rankings. The home stretch of the season for Rhode Island boys’ hockey is upon us. The regular season ends on Feb. 21, with the postseason to follow. Eight teams will duke it out for the state title, with a three-game quarterfinal series followed by single-elimination semifinals and championship games.
How Jamie Glance found success with the NTDP
Jamie Glance is tied for the NTDP lead in points. (USA Hockey) Last summer, Jamie Glance read the book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear, and it changed the way he approached life at the U.S. National Team Development Program. It provided a framework for building good habits and breaking bad ones, emphasizing incremental improvement.
Shorthanded BU blanked by Vermont 3-0 on the road
Filling in for a voiceless head coach Tara Watchorn during her midweek media call, assistant coach Megan Myers acknowledged players needed to step up in the absence of seniors Luisa and Lilli Welcke. After being swept by Vermont at home just two weeks ago, BU responded with a sweep of its own against Merrimack. Myers said that the players stepped up as the Welckes got settled in Italy to represent Germany in the Olympic Games.
Here comes LaSalle Academy
Here are the latest Rhode Island boys high school hockey rankings. As I stated in our last rankings, the results were starting to come for LaSalle Academy, which got off to a slow start because of a difficult schedule. Nothing has changed in the last two weeks; the Rams are the biggest risers in this week’s ranking because of several quality victories. Shane Gaudreau has excelled this season in an expanded role for LaSalle.
The Cole Hutson Experience
When kids are young in their hockey careers, parents are usually responsible for tying skates. It’s common practice to ask, “Are they tight enough?” Unless you’re Rob Hutson. He had a different approach when it was time for his four boys, Quinn, Lane, Cole and Lars, to lace up their skates. He wanted them to understand the physics of skating, so instead of tying skates like a boot, the Hutsons’ skates fit more like slippers.
BU men’s hockey blanked by Providence 4-0 at home
With a potential major winter storm looming, the Agganis Arena faithful went home hungry on Saturday night — and so did the Boston University men’s hockey team. At every Terriers’ home game, when BU scores a goal, fans get a free taco from El Jefe’s Taqueria. The Dog Pound often chants “WE WANT TACOS” in support of the Terriers. But with BU’s 3-0 loss at the hands of Providence on Saturday, there will be no free tacos.
BU women’s hockey trounced by Vermont in 5-2 loss
After its heartbreaking loss in the Beanpot final on Tuesday, the Boston University women’s hockey team needed to turn the page to Vermont and put together a bounce-back performance. That did not happen for the Terriers, who have now lost three consecutive games after falling 5-2 to the Catamounts on Friday evening at Walter Brown Arena. BU outplayed Harvard at TD Garden in Tuesday’s defeat, but that wasn’t the case against Vermont.
NOTEBOOK: BU men’s hockey still taking things day by day ahead of series against UMass Lowell
Despite still being on the outside looking in at the NPI, the Boston University men’s hockey team is taking things one game at a time, all while time is running out. Currently sitting 20th, the Terriers can’t afford to lose any more games to teams well below them, and that can be said about this weekend’s home and home series against UMass Lowell, which sits 46th in the NPI.
Rhode Island boys top 5: Can anyone beat Bishop Hendricken?
Here are the latest Rhode Island boys high school hockey rankings. It’s Bishop Hendricken’s world, and the rest of Rhode Island boys hockey is just living in it, with the reigning Division 1 state champions rolling through the first month of the season. In my last rankings, I placed Moses Brown ahead of the Hawks, calling it a “1A and 1B” situation, rather than declaring one better than the other. Well, on Friday, the top two teams in the state squared off, and Bishop Hendricken decided for me.
BU women’s hockey takes down New Hampshire 2-1 on the road
Boston University women’s hockey survived the infamous Beanpot trap game, defeating New Hampshire 2-1 on Saturday evening. Before shifting their focus to Northeastern next Tuesday, the Terriers stayed in the moment for their trip to the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H., on Saturday night — and they delivered. BU extended its streak of strong play in 2026, remaining undefeated in the New Year.
BU men’s hockey opens second half with 1-0 win at UMass
AMHERST, Mass. — In need of a quality performance to open the second half of the season, Boston University men’s hockey delivered with a tight-checking 1-0 victory on the road against UMass. Finally fully healthy, the Terriers played a complete game in all three zones, limiting the Minutemen’s chances to strike. BU was aggressive without the puck, something that most certainly pleased head coach Jay Pandolfo.
Tynan Lawrence joining BU men’s hockey for the second semester
Tynan Lawrence, one of the top prospects in the 2026 NHL Draft, is joining the Boston University men’s hockey team for the spring semester, a source confirmed to the Boston Hockey Blog. Lawrence, who many view as the best center in his draft class, played the first half of the season for the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the United States Hockey League (USHL). A native of Fredericton, N.B., Canada, Lawrence has been committed to the Terriers since Aug.
BU women’s hockey rallies from behind against Quinnipiac, earns a crack at Belpot trophy
BELFAST, Northern Ireland — The Boston University women’s hockey team’s schedule has been “jam-packed with fun things” since crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Whether it’s been the Carrickfergus Castle or the Titanic Museum, the Terriers have enjoyed what’s a new city for most. But, after all, they are in Belfast to play hockey.
BU women’s hockey advances to Friendship Series final with 2-2 tie and shootout win over Quinnipiac
BELFAST, Northern Ireland — For the first half-hour of its Friendship Series opener, the Boston University women’s hockey team looked arguably worse than it has all season. For the second half-hour, the Terriers looked close to their very best. However and wherever BU found the switch to flip is anyone’s guess.
Rhode Island boys top 5: How the best stack up entering 2026
Here are the latest Rhode Island boys high school hockey rankings. Just as our first in-season rankings did to our preseason list, this week’s Rhode Island top five has some shakeups — even more than before. For the second consecutive week, a new No. 1 team has emerged. For the first time, however, a new team entered the rankings.
Rhode Island boys hockey top 5: There's a new No. 1
Here are the latest Rhode Island boys high school hockey rankings. We are just over two weeks into the Rhode Island boys' high school hockey season, and the top teams in the state are already squaring off, shuffling our preseason rankings. There are no new teams in the top five this week, and the five squads listed below seem to have already separated themselves from the rest of the pack. Division 1 dominates this week's ranking. That doesn't mean it will be that way forever.
Stars for Rhode Island high school hockey
JD Plante is a top player for La Salle Academy. (Ava Giorgi) There’s no shortage of talent in Rhode Island high school hockey — the challenge is keeping top players in the state, as many choose to leave for prep schools across New England. In Division 1, the top players are often younger. In Division 2, the standout players tend to be older, putting up big point totals as they dominate the league. Of course, there are always outliers and surprises.
Rhode Island boys hockey top 10: Who will reign this season?
Here are our top 10 teams in Rhode Island boys high school hockey. The landscape of high school hockey in Rhode Island is constantly shifting, with players transferring within the state and others leaving for — or returning from — prep schools across New England. A team’s success last season doesn’t guarantee it will repeat that performance this year — and the opposite is just as true.
For BU men’s hockey, development drives success
BOSTON UNIVERSITY MEN’S HOCKEY has a rich history. Its tradition dates to the program’s first game in 1918, and there are five national championship banners hanging from the ceiling at Agganis Arena to show for it. But it’s been over 15 years since one’s been raised, despite contending annually. Still, year after year, the best players choose to bear the Scarlett and White. Why? It’s because playing for BU is a springboard to playing professional hockey.
