The Very American, Very Intense World of High-School Debate
ne of America’s sunnier national convictions is that when people disagree it is useful, even virtuous, for competing sides to make their cases to the public. We wrap this belief in decorum and sometimes in misleading history—the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates looked more like soccer-hooligan meetups than like any genteel vision of measured discourse in wood-panelled rooms.
Patty Griffin’s Life Fell Apart. Rebuilding Gave Her Music a Jolt.

Patty Griffin did not intend to embarrass her mother on her debut album. In the early ’90s, Griffin recorded a series of simple demos to get gigs within Boston’s songwriter circuit. She had written “Sweet Lorraine” — a biographical snapshot of her mother’s rough-and-tumble upbringing — in a flash.

Has a big village of tiny homes eased homelessness in Austin?
In the next few years, Community First is poised to grow to nearly 2,000 homes across three locations, which would make it by far the nation’s largest project of this kind, big enough to permanently house about half of Austin’s chronically homeless population. Tiny-home villages for people who have been homeless have existed on a small scale for several decades, but have recently become a popular approach to addressing surging homelessness.

Opinion | What Teaching History in Texas Looks Like
Opinion|What Teaching History in Texas Looks Like https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/28/opinion/teaching-history-in-texas.html Much like in Florida, the fight over public education in Texas has become a lighting rod in the country’s culture wars. Seventh-grade social studies teachers, who teach a full year of Texas state history, are required to describe the defenders of the Alamo in a “heroic” light. I attended Robert E.

In Search for Meaning — Blind Magazine
It all started from church basements. Dull spaces meant to be functional rather than glamorous. Hidden spaces, apart from the outside world and therefore able to create a smaller circle within. From there, Eli Durst adventured into a wide variety of situations that implied group activities centred around common search.
