What lies beyond offsetting? Original
Beyond reducing their own emissions in line with the 1.5 degrees Celsius ambition, companies with the means to do so can and should financially contribute to climate action outside their own value chains. However, there is little agreement on how this can be done in the most effective way. Historically, the main way to support climate action outside value-chains has been to purchase carbon credits to compensate for a company’s own greenhouse gas emissions.
Upstream decarbonization through a carbon takeback obligation: An affordable backstop climate policy
Context & scale We introduce the carbon takeback obligation (CTBO), a supply-side mitigation policy requiring extractors and importers of fossil fuels to recapture and store a progressively increasing fraction of the CO2 generated by their activities and products, and use a novel integrated assessment model (IAM) emulator to compare this policy to conventional demand-side mitigation policy.
The higher education sector needs high integrity carbon offsetting – it starts by asking the right questions - HEPI
This blog was kindly contributed by Piers M Forster, University of Leeds and Eli Mitchell-Larson, University of Oxford. This blog builds on a COP26 UK University Network Briefing: How can carbon offsetting help UK further and higher education institutions achieve net zero emissions? The Briefing was authored by a mix of eleven researchers and sustainability managers representing seven higher education institutions in the UK.
Cold waves are getting milder in the northern midlatitudes
The strong two-day cold wave in the midwestern United States in January 2019 again ignited the discussion as to whether cold waves are getting more severe or not as a result of Arctic amplification due to climate change. Assessing the evolution of cold waves in the northern hemisphere midlatitudes in the observations has been difficult because the variability of cold waves is large compared to anthropogenic warming.
Right topics, wrong emphasis: the Carney Taskforce on carbon offsetting misses the mark
by Eli Mitchell-Larson Carbon offsetting is once again booming, driven by a flurry of net zero commitments from businesses and institutions. But controversy over offsetting persists. The Mark Carney-led Taskforce for Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets (the "Taskforce") is among the highest profile efforts attempting to offer clarity, and a recently-released consultation document previews their blueprint for a functioning offsetting market. Is it likely to work?
