Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing about video games for American Online (AOL).

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I'm so old I took a typing class in high school.

How is social media changing news?

It changed everything. Now you can get news anytime, day or night, without needing to be near a TV or a newspaper.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Ron Burgundy

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Lord Byron said it best, "If I don't write to empty my mind, I go mad."

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email or social media is acceptable.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Back end SlashGear CMS and Word.

What's your favorite social network?

Because I'm old... Facebook.

Who do you wish followed you?

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Why did you become a journalist?

There's something intrinsically special about stringing together words to tell a story.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope, never did.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A recent one I wrote about for SlashGear -- "The World's First Minivan And The Man Who Built It."

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

“Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.”

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time, day or night.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

A fastball over the heart of the plate.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

There is no "worst" pitch, only pitches I have no interest in doing.

What's your favorite drink?

Water 90% of the time, which allows me to drink bourbon and beer.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Watching baseball and/or football and/or any number of Sci-Fi shows.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

IFLScience (or MLB.com)

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

It's not always about the horsepower or torque. The history behind a wheeled work of art is usually more intriguing.
