Held for political ransom
In Cambodia, those detained on controversial charges see themselves as pawns in a repetitive game of political chess. Will the rules stay the same? Nay Vanda wakes every day for a 6am roll call. The prisoners sharing the 42-year-old’s 4-by-5 metre cell in Prey Sar shout out a number, one to 30. Like most in the prison, the room is overcrowded. The inmates sleep on their sides, wedged together, but even then there is not enough space.
Num Ansorm: The salacious street snack
Consumed by Cambodians for centuries, Num Ansorm and Num Kom are more than just ricebased snacks – they carry a special spiritual, and sexual, significance. Mom Thy, 47, wakes up in the dead of night to make a stack of the banana leaf-wrapped sticky rice treats called Num Ansorm, which he pedals around town on his cart filled with hot coals. “I wake up at 1am to prepare them and start selling at 5,” he says.
Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh to receive peace award at Iranian film festival
The Fajr International Film Festival in Iran has announced it will honour Cambodian director Rithy Panh’s long cinematic career and focus on humanitarian issues in film with the Fajr Peace Award. Panh, 53, has made over a dozen films over his three decade career and most recently co-produced Angelina Jolie’s Netflix adaptation of First They Killed My Father, telling the true story of a young girl under the Khmer Rouge.
Long-awaited surrogacy draft law finalised
Cambodia's Justice Ministry has finished a first draft of the Kingdom’s long-awaited surrogacy law, and is due to hand it over to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs next week. The law is expected to ban the commercial industry but permit altruistic surrogacy – a controversial subject given the latter’s potential for abuse.
Ministry changes SME data
Readers of the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft’s summarised annual report may have been shocked to find the number of small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) operating in Cambodia was nearly four times larger than it was reported to be last year. That’s because the ministry has changed the way it tracks SMEs, according to Laim Kim Leng, director-general of the SME department at the ministry.
Garment sector looking to tackle road accidents
Garment sector stakeholders yesterday mulled over a strategy to tackle the high number of road accidents involving factory workers, an issue that has been a matter of concern to labour rights advocates for years.
Classrooms, courtrooms unwelcome for victims of sexual abuse
Tracing the space between the tiles on the table with her fingertip, Thavery* recalls how her teacher locked her in his classroom and stripped off her shirt and skirt. She has been forced to tell this story time and again, in front of courts, police and NGO workers, unearthing scenes she’d rather forget. It could re-traumatise her, but despite this, she tucks a lock of red-tinged hair behind her ear and agrees to speak, again. It was May 2013, and she was 14 years old.
