The 2026 legislative session in photos
A tumultuous year in Minnesota resulted in a 2026 legislative session of response. The assassination of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman, the Annunciation school shooting, fraud cases involving public programs and immigration enforcement operations fueled lawmakers to act. With these major events came a host of fallout issues that legislators navigated across party lines, especially in the tied House.
Whistles, monarch butterflies and other anti-ICE symbols join thousands at ‘No Kings’ Minnesota rally
Being the center of attention isn’t a Minnesota specialty. But Minnesotans clearly embraced having the nation’s attention at the “No Kings” rally on Saturday as thousands of them stood unified in opposition to President Donald Trump. Those in attendance appeared so unified that, when asked to take a moment of silence, it really was quiet. Crowd size was difficult to estimate but ranged from 100,000-200,000, depending on the source.

MinnPost's visual coverage of Minneapolis ICE crackdown, reaction
MinnPost visual journalist Ellen Schmidt has been covering the impact of ICE’s immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities since joining the newsroom last July. During that time she’s covered both federal agents and protesters, and was on the scene Jan. 7, after an ICE officer shot and killed 37-year-old mother and neighbor Renee Good. Later that day, Schmidt covered another immigration action and protest at Roosevelt High School, and a vigil held that night.

Caidon Williams, center, cheers as his friend wins the largest stuffy at the booth in the Mighty Midway at the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025 in Falcon Heights, Minn. Every summer, most of the photographers I know take at least one day to focus on The Great Minnesota Get-Together alongside hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans and visitors. There’s an infinite number of pictures to be made at this unique gathering.

Photos: Minneapolis fall colors
If you don’t get to be romantic about the changing seasons while walking around with your camera for work, this gallery of images is meant for you. Fortunately, I was able to let autumn charm me thoroughly over the last couple of weeks. As a former desert dweller who has recently returned home to Minnesota, nature’s colorful, quiet decay into winter might just be the best time of year.
Thousands march in local 'No Kings' protest in Minneapolis
The national “No Kings” movement came to Minneapolis on Saturday, with a reported 100,000 marchers descending on downtown in a protest that remained peaceful throughout the afternoon. Many attendees wore full-body character costumes to add a light-hearted air to the day in an act that the Washington Post reported was a way to thwart Republican narratives.
The Minnesota Renaissance Festival in pictures
The last Friday of the Minnesota Renaissance Festival brought fewer people out, with more room to explore the 16th century magical kingdom on a gorgeous fall day. If you’ve ever attended the more colloquially known Ren Faire, you are familiar with the giant smoked turkey legs, corseted dresses, friendly mermaids and the light-hearted air of jest. MinnPost’s photojournalist Ellen Schmidt leaned into the familiar favorites as she photographed Minnesota’s 54th Renaissance Festival.
As summer fades, the North Shore shines
As the days shorten, the waters of Minnesota’s greatest lake draw folks to soak up their last outdoor moments before the cold sets in. In Duluth, agate hunters parsed the sands at Park Point Beach, a group of young men foot-raced along the Duluth Harbor North Breakwater Lighthouse pier and cyclists enjoyed the lake walk. Bare feet navigated the chilly rocks at Artist’s Point in Grand Marais while campers took in the expansive views at Temperance River State Park.
Minneapolis mourns tragedy at Annunciation
On the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025, a gunman opened fire into a sanctuary full of children, educators and worshippers during a back-to-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic School and Church. Two children died, the shooter died by suicide and 17 people were injured. Minneapolis now has its place on the list of school shootings that have occurred across the nation.
