Elma Smit’s Biography
I specialise in broadcasting. Live and pre-recorded. Scripted and ad-lib. For TV, radio and the web.
At the moment I work in news and sport (rugby, mainly) but since my first day behind a mic in 2004, I've built a vast broadcasting background by gaining experience in a variety of lifestyle topics including music, entertainment and commercial hit radio.
I worked as a national breakfast TV anchor on a news and actuality-focused show for 2 and a half years (until March '15) during which time I also anchored a series of live, daily one-on-one's with a variety of South African political party leaders in the run up to the 2015 national elections. On the morning after Nelson Mandela's passing, I was also one of the anchors of a tribute special broadcast.
As far as web-based news is concerned, I first produced and anchored a series of daily web-broadcasts during the Oscar Pistorius trial for Beeld newspaper's web offering, which has since been rebranded to http://netwerk24.com. This short-term project delivered such promising results that it was re-developed in early 2015 and now lives on in the guise of #TopStories, a daily news bulletin created for on-demand viewing online, catered to the lunchtime and afternoon browser-spike on Netwerk24.com.
I've interviewed everyone from Jared Leto, to Dan Carter, Edwin Cameron, Mmusi Maimane, Bantu Holomisa and Jodi Picoult.
I hold a law degree from the university of Stellenbosch, and a post graduate honours in Journalism from the University of the Witwatersrand.
I started my career in broadcasting at the tender age of 18, at the community radio station in my home town.
If music was my first love, then news is my true love.
