Remarks by America's Second Gentleman
Thank you, Ms. Adi. Thank you to the people of Samoa for the warm welcome on this historic trip. I am grateful for your generous hospitality and the chance to visit this beautiful country. I had a good meeting with the Acting Prime Minister earlier today. And it’s been great to see firsthand all the work the Biden-Harris Administration is doing with Samoa. President Biden and Vice President Harris are committed to our partnership with Samoa. Our relationship has never been stronger.
No playing games with Australia’s reputation
Let’s make the obvious point: the athletes could all out-swim, out-run and out-jump me – even out lawn bowl, beach volleyball or clay pigeon shoot me. This decision stinks for them. Celebrating competition is wonderful. But as a vestige of the British Empire Games? Surely the bigger mystery is why an Australian government ever pledged a penny or a pound for the nostalgia of beating Barbados at badminton. Or why Australia bothers with the Commonwealth as an organisation at all?

Pacific seasonal workers: not the new blackbirds
Kirstie Petrou and John Connell’s new book Pacific Islands Guestworkers in Australia: The New Blackbirds? is an important publication. It is the first book on the Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP) – now part of the broader Pacific Australia Labour Mobility or PALM scheme – which, since 2007, has allowed Pacific Islanders to work on Australian farms. It is an interesting read, but a flawed account.
Samoa and the Alliance of Small Islands States show climate security is also about loss and damage
Samoa assumed a leadership role in January this year as chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), the negotiating bloc for small island developing states. Samoa is well placed to elevate the experience of Pacific Islands to influence global support on climate change security, with action on “loss and damage” talks as a special focus.
“We can’t be passive”: New Zealand’s changing tone about a more worrying world
Before jetting off on a whirlwind trip to Brussels, Stockholm, and the NATO Summit in Vilnius last Friday, New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins gave a speech setting out his vision of the country’s foreign policy. Besieged by domestic policy challenges for much of his six months in office, it was Hipkins’ first big set-piece address on New Zealand’s place in the world.

The Pacific Engagement Visa needs to be delivered
Labor’s announcement that it would introduce a Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV) to provide Pacific Island citizens with 3,000 permanent resident visas annually has been warmly welcomed in the region. Good progress was made with the new visa, with crucial details released at the start of the year, but it is now clear that the target starting date of 1 July has been missed.

Bonn could be another missed opportunity on climate change
It has been a while since I submitted a write-up on this important topic having been engaged fully in equally important cultural issues and substantive advocacy work in the last year or so. But I wanted to shift my focus this week to the global ‘talk fest’ currently happening in Bonn Germany 30 April to 10 May 2018. Undoubtedly, our government is represented by a number of officials attending.
It’s time to get serious about CO2, for the ocean’s sake and for ours
Message on World Environment Day As we commemorate World Environment Day, connecting with nature, we focus our periscope on our Ocean. We must remember that our actions affect the ocean, even if we don’t live by the beach or eat fish. Reducing our carbon dioxide emissions will support ocean health – and the alternative is grim. The carbon conversation is nothing new.
A group most people overlook
I don’t believe that the world is as evil as everyone says. I don’t believe that the news is an accurate representation of our world. Of course there are wars, terrorists, kidnappers, tyrants, murderers and it’s all important to know in this day and age. But there is so much more good in the world than what we hear, and you can find it, in a group most people ignore – “us” teenage girls. Teenage girls are some of the kindest people you will ever meet.
