Copy editor & fact-checker @sciam

Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

yes

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email, twitter

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Laptop, audio recorder, Otter.ai for transcription, CMS, AP style guide, even an old thesaurus sometimes

Why did you become a journalist?

I've always loved to write and wanted to make science more understandable

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

We didn't have one. My 8th grade English teacher asked me if I'd thought about being a journalist (I said no & forgot that for a long time!)

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

My switch from lab work to science writing was a little scary, but I'm so glad I took a chance and can do what I love.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Cooking, my favorite thing besides writing

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Too many to name. I like Undark a lot-- I worked there as a fact-checker part time while at MIT.
