Scoring, assisting or leading, Holly Turner just wants to win
Holly Turner loves to assist. Plain and simple. She’s been doing it since her first game with the Massachusetts women’s lacrosse team. In her first game as a Minutewoman, attacker Holly Turner stepped onto the field, shaking—mostly from the cold, but also from some nerves. She’s a freshman and she’s about to get her shot. In a close game against Connecticut, UMass coach Angela McMahon signals for Turner to take the field.
Emmi Beuger’s Day Off: S3E6 | Emmi Becomes Sporty
Emmi has night editor and future managing editor, Kyle DaLuz, on the podcast to talk about his time working in radio, his reporting on Kevin Cullen, the Collegian Sports section and the future of UMass Athletics. Kyle is basically Twitter famous, so he also answers some fun Twitter questions for our listeners. Don’t worry, it’s not just sports! It’s also opinion-related!
College taught me how to be alone
When one thinks about college, one usually thinks about all of the friends, the parties and the social interactions that one will encounter during their time at a university. Arriving at the University of Massachusetts as a freshman, I was excited to meet so many new people and have so many new experiences. Both of these things did happen to me, and I am so grateful for all of the people that I have met at UMass.

Diabetes isn’t a joke
Ever since I was nine years old, I have often had to explain my diabetes to people. No, I do not have Type I or Type II diabetes. I actually have diabetes insipidus, a rare illness where I am unable to retain water properly. It is not really related to Type I or Type II diabetes, other than the fact that it is an endocrine disorder and they share the same first scientific name. But most people don’t know that.

Best ways to brew coffee as a college student
Are you sick of drinking coffee from a Keurig? Are you done pumping coffee out of a stainless steel container at Harvest? I have been for the majority of my time at the University of Massachusetts. I went from working at a small coffee shop where I manually pulled shots of espresso and frothed lattes, to drinking instant coffee mixes and “coffee concentrate” from Roots Grab and Go. I wanted to find a way to have a quality cup of coffee.
Residential Life fees are unnecessary
At the University of Massachusetts’ orientation for new students, each student receives a UCard. That UCard is your ID, your ticket to enter dining halls, your access to your building, your card to store money for printers and laundry machines and more. Without it, you can’t do a lot of things. At one time or another, we have all misplaced these cards and went into a panic. Sometimes, it has been stolen.

Sports aren’t just ‘for the boys’
Over the past few years, conversations surrounding women’s involvement in and knowledge of sports have been at the forefront of the public consciousness. Cam Newton’s infamous comment about it being funny hearing a woman discuss routes stands out as an example of how women are not taken seriously in conversations about sports. Sexism pervades professional sports culture, especially in leagues like the National Football League where there are few women discussing the game.

Greek life isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay
Last year, I decided to join a sorority, but after only being a part of a Panhellenic organization for around eight months, I decided to disaffiliate. It was an extremely hard decision and it has taken me this long to finally speak about my experience openly. My mother had been in a sorority, but I didn’t see myself following the same path in college.

Transportation to the Pioneer Valley is expensive and inefficient
As an out-of-state student from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, my trips are characterized by experiences with the Peter Pan buses and trips to the airport, just like many other students. I have had terrible experiences using Peter Pan, and I know many students have had similar. When I came to tour the University of Massachusetts, my mother and I were told that it was very easy to take the Peter Pan to Logan International Airport in Boston.

Resolutions should not wait until the new year
A little over three weeks ago, 2017 became 2018, thus marking the start of New Year’s resolutions. People have been making New Year’s resolutions for about 4,000 years. Like many, I usually make a New Year’s resolution or two and, like many, I don’t end up achieving my resolutions. In fact, only eight percent of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions. Nevertheless, in the days leading up to New Year’s Eve, I started thinking about my resolutions.
Why hasn’t the Equal Rights Amendment been ratified?
After the excitement of the Women’s Marches on Jan. 21, which occurred all over the country and the world, women’s rights have been a constant topic in the news. Historically, women have been discriminated against. After all, we only won the right to vote a little less than a century ago with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. We have come quite a long way since then, but there is still much work to be done. We have always fought for equal rights, whether it is for our bodies or our vote.

Put the phone down and pay attention in class
Texting in class: we’ve all done it. It’s a normal occurrence in college classrooms. Whether it’s a lecture or a seminar, we all know of occasions where someone in the class was texting or playing a game on their phone. It is easier to get away with texting in a lecture, and it’s understandable that some people get bored. According to a recent study, more than 90 percent of students admit to using their phone in class for non-class related activities.

We’re all exhausted. After all, we’re college students, right? We’re supposed to be in a never-ending cycle of tired, caffeine-filled days and long, hardworking nights. If you type “tired college kid” into Google, you get dozens of results with titles such as “10 Struggles of the Exhausted College Student” as well as GIFs and memes that “perfectly describe the college experience.” So why are we supposed to be exhausted? And, more importantly, why do we glamorize being exhausted?
It’s time to break the mold on breaking up
I went through a breakup right before returning to school. After a long-term relationship, I was hurting and it was very difficult to adapt to not having someone by my side. We are on good terms and we have gone our separate ways. But I’m not writing this to talk about my breakup or my ex-boyfriend. I’m writing to talk about the post-breakup culture that makes an already difficult time impossible.

UMass dining should focus on content, not calories
Any student at the University of Massachusetts is familiar with the our dining commons. At each of the four dining halls, you can find a wide variety of foods from stir fry to sandwiches and sushi to all of the amazing desserts. You go up to the counter and ask for whatever you want in the buffet line. As you go down the line getting your food, you will see each dish labeled.

Community and local goods mix at student farmer’s market
We aren’t even halfway through September, but it already feels like fall at the student farmer’s market. Pumpkins sit near a tent as everyone tries to keep cool in the early fall heat. It looks like autumn, but it still feels like the last bit of summer for students. Two students, sustainable food and farming major Kyle Zegel and electrical engineering major Trevor Berry, played drums as students mingled about the lawn.
Eduroam endangering our education
If you’re a student at the University of Massachusetts like I am, you’re most likely familiar with Eduroam, the school’s infamous wi-fi network. We’ve all been there: you sit down to do some homework or submit an assignment on Moodle and your laptop won’t connect to the internet. If you’re me, you restart your computer over and over to no avail. You then decide to re-register your device and that still doesn’t work.
There’s no right or wrong in real-life debate
Many of us have had to debate in class at some point, whether it was in high school or college. Sometimes, you got to be on the side you agreed with, making your assignment that much easier. Other times, you had to be on the side you didn’t agree with, making your assignment a true challenge. Why? Because what we agree with comes easily to us, while opposing opinions pose a more difficult, complex problem that we often do not want to tackle unless we are forced to do so.
In progressive Pennsylvania, history is holding women back
A few weeks ago, the United States celebrated Women’s Equality Day. Almost one hundred years ago, on Aug. 26, 1920, the became law and women were granted the right to vote. As a young woman who has just recently started voting, I know what an important day it is to celebrate. But this year, prior to Women’s Equality Day, a study came out examining gender equality in the workplace.
“This place would not pass any health codes” – ACLU of Pennsylvania – Medium
Prisoners don’t get a lot of meaningful attention. Sure, some reality television shows claim to show “life on the inside” while occasional documentaries bring attention to prison conditions. But, for the most part, prisons serve their basic function?—?that of regulating prisoners’ “movements, activity, and effectiveness,” as Foucault put it, and of separating them from society.

The Massachusetts Daily Collegian
I’ve been very stressed lately and in need of alone time, so I’ve watched some TED Talks. I’ve only watched two so far but one that I recently watched, “How to make hard choices” by Ruth Chang, really stuck with me. The biggest takeaway from her talk is that when making a hard choice, one alternative might not be better than the other, because what you might consider to be “the best option” may not always be available to you.

The NFL is too lenient on abusers
As a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I was not in the least bit upset when Tom Brady was suspended for four games for his role in Deflategate. I felt that a suspension of some type was warranted, but as his suspension was announced, I felt that four games was not a fair punishment. And why did I think that? Because the National Football League has given suspensions that are far shorter for instances of domestic violence and drug use.
