Accountability for long-term English learners
English learners who remain classified as such past an appropriate amount of time face lower academic achievement and higher dropout rates. Helping them requires dealing with long-standing systemic issues. English learners (ELs) are often referred to as the “fastest growing population” in K-12 schools (Najarro, 2023). The EL population has grown by 35% in the last 20 years (UnidosUS, 2022), and today roughly one in 10 public school students is an EL (National Center for Education Statistics, 2023).
Building bridges together
Years ago, I attended a discussion group for local educators. The goal was to understand what challenges they were facing and what our organization could do to help them. Almost everyone in the room talked about the influx of non-English-speaking students into their schools. They wanted to help the students learn, but they were overwhelmed and didn’t know what to do. These educators may have been using a deficit lens that sees newcomer students as a problem to solve.
Minority Serving Institutions: Leaders in teacher education innovation
One of the most controversial aspects of teacher education concerns how much clinical practice teacher candidates need in authentic classrooms before they are ready to become effective and confident full-time teachers of record. At one end of the spectrum are alternative teacher education programs in which college graduates with little to no training in education work full-time as lead teachers in underserved schools from the outset of their commitment.
The translanguaging school
When schools welcome bilingual students’ home languages, students are better able to learn new content and feel connected to their schools. Students who come to U.S. schools speaking a language other than English offer a wealth of experiences and knowledge. Their presence and participation in U.S. classrooms enrich discussions across subject areas.
Centering educators of color in teacher preparation
Teacher preparation programs must commit to valuing the backgrounds, experiences, and cultural assets of preservice and early-career BIPOC educators. Despite wide acknowledgment that the teaching profession needs to better reflect the increasing diversity of the U.S. student population, a paltry number of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color) teachers and teacher candidates enroll and persist in teacher prep programs.
