Have you ever used a typewriter?
YES! I'm older than I look!
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is really the best way. Between traveling and having a full time gig, it's the only way you're going to nail me down.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram. I'm obsessed and it's a problem.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did not, but did write for our literary magazine. Back when I liked creative writing more than journalism.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Once I found my lane in f+b, I have been proud of almost every story - or at least an aspect of each. My earlier stuff... don't read it!
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Get a good mentor and try different verticals to see what feels right to you. Also - never underestimate your skill set!
When's the best time to pitch you?
Between 11 and 6, EST. I do try to respond to emails in the evening when all is quiet. In the morning, your pitch will be beyond lost.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Any pitch that says, "Hello XX," or doesn't have my right name on it.
What's your favorite drink?
Wine, always. Although a good port and tonic is appreciated, and creative bourbon cocktails are also a treat. And Spindrift. Obsessed.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Walking Dakota or at SoulCycle, mostly.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Avid Food + Wine reader. I also love to see my other F+B journalist friends be published, it's so interesting to learn their views.
