Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Casual newsreader for radio, reading live to local population of 185,000. Scored the job after doing work experience.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I got one from a garage sale when I was 12-years-old. I loved that thing. But it was so loud!

How is social media changing news?

It makes it more accessible and, perhaps, wider read. But it is impacting the industry by lowering revenue streams and reducing quality.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be passionate and curious about...everything! Everyone has a story.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Office, Mac software, Adobe Creative Suite

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I wanted to impact change, give a voice to people and provide a rounded view on complex issues.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Not American so unfortunately not :( I would have loved that chance.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Learn as many skills as you can. You never know when they will come in use and the opportunities that will come from that.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Hiking — I love being in nature as it is a mental release. And if it's winter and I'm near a ski hill, you can bet I'll be snowboarding.
