Frontex: a public agency incapable of accountability
As the movement of people across the Mediterranean has become securitised, Frontex has come to the fore-not to good effect. The shipwreck near Pylos last June, one of the greatest modern tragedies in Greek waters, claimed more than 600 lives. In its wake, criticism of the operation in Greece of the European Union's border-security agency, Frontex, reached an all-time high.

Comparing living and working conditions: Germany out-performs the United States This paper compares living and working conditions in the US and Germany for the year 2022 with a focus on economic, social and environmental standards. Emphasis is also placed on income and wealth inequality. Twelve dimensions of comparison are used, split into 15 themes, examined with 80 indicators. Germany comes out ahead on 10 of the themes.
Protecting EU health policy from tobacco lobbying
The European Commission should minimise meetings with the tobacco industry, publicise and fully minute them. A common theme of much of my work as European ombudsman has involved examining the ways in which influence is wielded within the administration of the European Union. As the second largest lobbying centre in the world, Brussels plays host to a veritable army of companies, industry groups and organisations, all seeking to leave their mark on EU legislation.

[Opinion] How to restore the European Parliament's reputation
Opinion By Emily O'Reilly Brussels, Today, 13:22 What happens when a weak anti-corruption system meets a strong desire to corrupt? The answer was obvious once the general shape of the European Parliament scandal became clear—that a Gulf state has apparently bank-rolled a web of corruption and bribery in the EU's only directly-elected institution. [Opinion] Brussels 'becoming like Washington' for revolving-doors
Faced with such potentially existential crises what purpose does it serve to critique the EU administration for possible lapses or for failures to be entirely open about its work? It's a very busy time after all. The answer of course is that none of those crises turned up overnight. The seeds were sown over years if not decades, at both national and EU levels, and not just through bad political choices. Poor administration went hand in hand with many of them.
The Uber Files-a wake-up call for the EU institutions
The huge challenges facing the EU can only be met if citizens are confident it acts in the public interest. Earlier this month, we saw the murky side of American corporate lobbying in Europe spill out of the shadows and on to the front pages of our newspapers. On display, in remarkable detail, were the tactics used by the multinational company Uber to try to change national and European Union legislation and regulation to suit its business model.
Towards transparency by design in the EU
Citizens must have access to information to engage with the democratic life of the union, the European ombudsman argues. Twenty years ago the European Union ushered in a far-reaching and progressive piece of legislation, soon known as the ‘transparency law’. While not perfect, it became a cornerstone of efforts to make EU institutions more accountable by giving concrete expression to the right of public access to their documents.
[Opinion] 20 years of public access to EU documents: time for makeover?
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the coming into force of the EU 'transparency law' (officially, Regulation 1049/2001), a move which gave concrete expression to the right of public access to EU documents and significantly increased the accountability of the EU administration.
TTIP Transparency
The following timeline guides you through the development of transparency around the TTIP negotiations. Browse through, and let us know if you think we have missed something! Consolidated texts are those where the EU and the US positions on issues are shown side-by-side. These documents are crucial for assessing accountability by comparing those positions with the final text both during the negotiating process and once the agreement is reached.
