SALT LAKE CITY — Sam Matthews has lived in Provo, Utah, his whole life. Now, as one of the city's mailmen, he drives across the city nearly every day. "I've delivered to basically all of Provo," Matthews told the Deseret News during his morning route on Friday. "Provo is probably the most friendly place you could be." Provo was just named America's most neighborly city by Neighbor.com's 2026 Most Neighborly Cities in America rankings.
Gen Z is feeling nostalgic. Experts say it might be a good thing
SALT LAKE CITY — An old song playing on the radio. The revival of a fashion trend from 30 years ago. The smell of a home-cooked meal. Each of these could lead to the same thought: "Ahh, that's nostalgic." And among Gen Z, many are feeling nostalgic for eras in which they weren't even alive. In a recent national survey, 68% of Gen Z respondents reported feeling nostalgic for eras before their lifetime, while 73% said they were drawn to styles, media and hobbies from earlier periods.
Fighting fire with fire
RICHFIELD — Utah Sen. John Curtis held his phone up in front of him at eye level and pressed the small record button at the bottom of his screen. Visible in the camera frame behind him was a wall of smoke fueled by a mass of flames burning up dry ground. "I am at what is called a prescribed burn," Curtis said Wednesday, filming a video to send to his grandkids. "A planned fire which helps prevent bigger fires later on." While he spoke, orange flames flickered in the wind just over his shoulder.

"Everybody is tuned in when a wildfire happens," said Jamie Barnes, state forester and director of the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, in an interview with the Deseret News.

Renewable energy is growing in Utah, but not without obstacles
The use of solar energy is increasing in the United States, and Utah is no exception. Utah generated more energy from solar than any other type of energy in May, according to data released by Ember. Utah's ideal conditions for solar generation, available land for energy and transmission projects, and rich mineral deposits have led to recent expansion of the renewable energy industry throughout the state. "Federally, people are taking notice of what we do in Utah," Rep.
