Abstract Introduction: Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) populations are declining, emphasizing the need for conservation throughout their range. An understudied and underutilized area for conservation includes rangelands managed with livestock grazing. Although this region is on the edge of the eastern monarch population range, rangelands can provide billions of milkweed (Asclepias spp.) stems, the host plant for monarch butterflies.
