Research becoming priority for higher salary
Associate professor of piano Paul Shaw recently learned, much to his surprise, that his salary is much lower than the average of others at his rank. "I always thought that my salary was on the low end," Shaw said. "But I didn't know it was that low." The Minnesota Daily's analysis of salary data for University faculty and staff has shown great variations among the teaching faculty and staff on campus.
How much do professors make: A brief overview of faculty salaries
The American Association of University Professors released its annual report on faculty salaries today. The report, titled "Where are the priorities?" touched on the widening gap between salaries at public and private universities, as well as the differences in salary between high-ranking athletics and faculty personnel. University salaries are in the bottom third among top-30 research universities, University Chief Financial Officer Richard Pfutzenreuter said.

Oakdale mall project on hold for six months
Residents hoping to see the demolition of Oakdale's eyesore mall property this month will have to wait until the middle of next year. After a dispute over title issues landed the city and the mall owner in Washington County District Court last month, city officials said a new sale date has been negotiated for March 31. California-based property owner Joseph Kashani had agreed to sell the property to the city with an expected closing date in July 2010.
Hugo business carving out its niche in wood
Manomin Resawn Timbers has many of the characteristics of a company that might face troubled times in the current recession: A small enterprise catering to speciality orders in the construction business. Instead, owners Mark Clasen and Sarah Londerville said they've found continuing success by offering something special: They are one of the few businesses in the Twin Cities that reclaims old wood and designs custom floors, panels and furniture.
Ramsey board OKs new library site
The Ramsey County Board on Tuesday voted to move the Arden Hills Library collection to the New Brighton Family Service Center in 2011. Commissioners spent more than an hour discussing the proposal before voting 6-1 to approve it. Last year, the county directed the Library Board to find a new home for the aging Arden Hills Library. Otherwise, the branch would be closed at the end of 2010. The Library Board considered proposals from Presbyterian Homes in Arden Hills as well as the New Brighton site.
Washington County carrying highest rate of commercial vacancies
In the first half of 2010, Washington County had the highest commercial vacancy rate in the metro area, according to reporting by Cassidy Turley, a local commercial real estate firm. Office and retail vacancies in the county, about 30 percent and 12 percent respectively, significantly outpace the metro-wide levels of 20 percent and 8 percent. But that can be a bit misleading because Washington County is a smaller market and one or two vacancies can drive up the overall numbers.
County may dive into social media
@washingtoncounty has something to tell you. Or at least, that could be the case in a month or two if the Washington County Board of Commissioners approves a number of pilot programs for county departments to enter the social media scene. "For a while, the tendency was to stick our heads in the sand, but the reality is there's a growing demand by society to have more interaction," Molly O'Rourke, the county's deputy administrator, told commissioners in a workshop recently.

Lund, Crestliner aren't facing cuts -- for now -- in soft boat market
Brunswick Corporation's announcement on Thursday that it plans to scale back its recreational boat manufacturing won't have any immediate effect on the company's two Minnesota-based subsidiaries, Lund Boat Co. and Crestliner Inc., said Brunswick spokesman Dan Kubera. But he added that the company will eliminate about 50 jobs at its Bayliner boat factory in Pipestone, Minn.
