Racing's Biggest Problem, And The Solution: Chance Timm
In a new TDN series, we are asking industry participants what racing's biggest problem is, and what the solution to that problem is. Today, Chance Timm, a bloodstock agent and partner at Grovendale Sales, shares his thoughts. What do you think is racing's biggest problem? I think the lack of a central unified body to regulate and manage racing for the greater good of racing has been a hole in the industry for a long time. There are secondary issues that need to be addressed and could be fixed.
Racing's Biggest Problem, And The Solution: Tony Lacy
In a new TDN series, we are asking the industry what is racing's biggest problem, and what is the solution to that problem. Today, Keeneland's Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy joins us to offer his perspective. What do you think is racing's biggest problem? I think the biggest problem is that our industry is not speaking as one. Consolidation, where we have everybody singing off the same hymn sheet, is critical.
Racing's Biggest Problem, And The Solution: Lisa Lazarus
In a new TDN series, we are asking industry participants what racing's biggest problem is, and what the solution to that problem is. Today, we asked HISA's CEO Lisa Lazarus for her thoughts. What do you think is racing's biggest problem? I think the biggest problem with our industry is the lack of centralization of commercial rights. That is unlike other sporting initiatives, where teams work together to create a league or to create storylines that make sport exciting.
Racing's Biggest Problem, And The Solution: Jacob West
In a new TDN series, we are asking industry participants what racing's biggest problem is, and what the solution to that problem is. What do you think is racing's biggest problem? I believe our number one issue is not having a national racing and stakes calendar that focuses on marketing our marquee race days and showcasing the best our sport has to offer. What is the solution?
With Hardy At The Helm, Horse Country Goes From Strength To Strength
In October, 2015, to mark the first-ever Breeders' Cup held at Keeneland, the non-profit organization Horse Country was formed with an eye towards opening up the behind-the-scenes beauty of Central Kentucky's horse farms to the public. In the first five months of 2016, they sold 10,000 tickets, allowing people to visit a dozen farms, two veterinary clinics, and a feed company.
Racing's Biggest Problem, And The Solution: David Ingordo
In a new TDN series, we are asking industry participants what racing's biggest problem is, and what the solution to that problem is. Today, we ask bloodstock agent David Ingordo, “What do you think is racing's biggest problem?” Racing has a lot of things going right, and I think we focus on the negatives a lot, but there are real problems in the sustainability of the industry.
Is Spotify making music more boring?
But, like paper maps or ice caps, this dazzling experience is dying a sad, slow death. Opportunities for exposure to new music are dwindling, and so are the chances of these musical eureka moments. The culprit: a simple green circle with three black lines. Despite giving us an entire world of tracks at our fingertips, Spotify is drawing our musical chalk circles tighter and tighter around us. This is partly because its payment model encourages songwriters to be more samey.
A bookworm’s haven: what are ‘book towns’ around the world?

These are small rural towns and villages with a large concentration of second-hand and antiquarian bookshops, officially recognised by the International Organisation of Book Towns. The most famous is probably OG book town Hay-on-Wye in Wales, with its well-known book festival.
Hobby Hub: Guitar

But playing guitar is the kind of hobby that only gets fun when you’re moderately good at it. In order to get to this stage you have to be consistent, which for me means making it compulsory.
A painting, or a thousand words: Weighing up art therapy and talk therapy.
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates Source: Wikimedia.commons.org Art therapy involves articulating complex thoughts and feelings through making art. It’s a relatively new, experimental treatment for mental health issues, whereby a trained therapist guides you towards creates something that reflects how you feel, and helps you interpret your creations. In contrast to this comes talking therapy, the one we all know (and maybe love).

Voice of Newcastle Metro revealed
Bryant, 46, from Hebburn, can be seen repeating the familiar phrases to Metro users in a video recently released by Nexus. They are pleasantly surprised and amused to hear him replicate the exact tone and timbre of the announcements. He also jokingly describes what it is like to hear his own voice on a commute. The video comes as 46 brand-new trains have been added to the existing fleet, with the aim of replacing the fleet in full by 2026.
In bad taste: Against Hooters coming to Newcastle
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates Image source: Anthony92931 on WikiCommons From start to finish, Hooters is a terrible place. The founders came up with the idea as an April Fool’s joke and were very surprised when it actually took off across the pond. They were so unserious they nicknamed it a ‘breastaurant’.
Student crime in Newcastle: Why does it seem to be getting worse?
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates Image Source_Creativecommons Student crime does seem to be getting worse. But the key words here are “seem to be”. In actual fact, it’s not. Despite the large number of unsettling TikTok videos on the topic, there is no evidence to support any of these incidents. Northumbria Police and both universities have released official statements clarifying there is no basis of truth to the claims. So why does it “seem to be” getting worse?
A bad trip: is volunteering abroad always ethical?
Putting myself in the shoes of a budding voluntourist, I searched for a programme on one of the most popular voluntourism platforms, volunteerabroad.com, and quickly landed on the ‘Safari and Community Outreach’ trip in Tanzania. It promises a blast of hiking, safari camping and cultural day trips alongside a vague ‘community outreach placement’. Oh, and it costs £300 a week. It’s with this price tag that the problematic side starts to arise. Payment means business model.
The impact of social media on running
Thanks to social media, running has become more popular and accessible than ever before. Advice spreads easily, communities are formed, the jokey accounts give you a good laugh. Online discourse on the acceptability of wearing running vests (to carry items like gels, water and phones) regardless of distance or pace has exposed elitism in the running world and made it much more inclusive.
How to make time for sport amid lectures and deadlines

The first step is finding a sport you properly enjoy; you can’t expect tons of motivation for something you’re ambivalent about.
Dressing smart: a reflection on whether branding matters
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates Image Source: Unsplash, SJ Clothes are designed to be seen, which means our outfits will unavoidably send a message. People go for high-quality brands because of the assumptions they have of them. They’re better quality, feel good, and last much longer than own-brand or non-branded items, it is assumed. They’re also considered more ethical in terms of sourcing materials and paying staff.
Lifestyle’s visit to the opening of Newcastle’s Christmas Markets
The afternoons may be dark and the chill may be biting, but with the opening of the Christmas markets in the heart of the city, midwinter in Newcastle is anything but bleak. The festivities were launched with pomp and circumstance at 10am on Saturday 16th, in the shadow of the great Grey’s Monument.

Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates And of course, if you’re any kind of performer, they’re your holy grail. Gig experience, a chance to test out new material, spreading your name and reputation, just for fun… There’s no real reason not to go. Particularly if you’re a performer in Newcastle, the Toon offers a great range of open mics for people to take to the stage. Some differ in style and convention though, so here’s a rundown of two of the best.

In a national newspaper! In the headlines! Where people will read it! I was actually really happy to see the science team suggest this topic (thanks guys). But this excitement quickly turned sour when I saw that it’s in the news because it’s been linked to increased mortality.
Top Tips for Improving Communication in Relationships

If you can’t effectively explain to each other what you are experiencing, you will misunderstand each other, which can breed difficult feelings like anger, resentment or mistrust. If this goes on long and deep enough, it can even threaten the relationship.

Have no misgivings: the dedication and hard work this requires is unimaginable.

The Dark Truth Behind the New Duolingo Icon
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates Source: Flickr According to the company behind the popular language-learning app, this is simply a way of encouraging people to keep up their lessons, because it is possible for users with a streak to choose another icon. The idea is that users will start a streak to get rid of the ugly icon. But if shocking people into learning a new language is seemingly benign, this tactic is more nefarious than it might seem.
Battle of the commute activities
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates Last year I lived in a large city with a daily 90-minute one-way metro ride, and actually grew to love this big chunk of time where I could do whatever I wanted. To entertain myself and avoid mindless Instagram scrolling, I tried lots of different activities, some of which turned out to be better for commuting than others. Here’s a rundown: Listening to music Good for when you’re tired and can’t function, as it’s very passive.
Addressing the stigma of being a virgin at uni

It’s like eating or breathing or scuba diving or buying Palmolive aloe vera soap, it’s just something people do. It’s not defining, there’s no test you can do to prove you’re a virgin or not. But of course, psycho-sociologically it’s a gigantic anxiety-inducing social-status-determining monster.

Amid this, it’s common to find hobbies slipping by the wayside.

Defining Radical Honesty

Miles Routledge in Afghanistan: The rise of danger tourism
When travelling, we all want to go beyond the crowded tourist hotspots and discover the ‘real’ side of the destination. But what happens when the desire for the off the beaten track goes too far? We can arguably see this firsthand with Miles Routledge, a so-called ‘danger tourist’. Routledge, or ‘Lord Miles’ to his fans and followers, was recently released from captivity by the Taliban along with three other Brits, having been presumed dead since his arrest in Afghanistan in March 2023.
Shrinkflation and its effect on customers
Are we getting our money's worth? Image source: Pixabay, stevepb Another year, another portmanteau… and all of us should be aware of this latest one. The new blended word is ‘shrinkflation’, which means what it says on the (smaller) tin: grocery packages shrinking in size whilst their prices increase or remain the same. It’s becoming a widespread practice by manufacturers and supermarkets in the UK, so if you feel like you’re going through your weekly shop more quickly, you probably are.

Ultramarathon runner disqualified after taking car ride mid-race
You cannot compete in ultra-endurance running events without being an incredibly hard worker. Big Roman dick energy - researchers at Newcastle Uni and University College Dublin analyse phallic archaeological find
At first glance, it doesn’t seem too noteworthy. In 1992 a 2,000 year old object was found at a Roman fort in Northumberland and catalogued as a darning tool. After all, the Romans must have needed to repair their clothes just like anyone else. It seems though, also like everyone else, they appreciated their sexy time.
