What was your first job as a journalist?
I worked on the Independent foreign affairs newsdesk while studying journalism, mostly work experience, but on one shift I was paid.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
No.
How is social media changing news?
It has created a 24/7 news cycle, and helped writers to engage better with audiences. But it can get overwhelming sometimes.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Dexter Fletcher.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To help stop democracy from dying in darkness.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
Barack Obama already follows me, maybe Joe Biden would be nice too?
Why did you become a journalist?
I love writing and enjoy meeting interesting people.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm proud to write any story which might combat misinformation.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be determined.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Out for a run, or enjoying being in nature.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I can't narrow it down to one! I enjoy lots of different newspapers and news outlets.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That journalism is very well paid, and that journalists can't keep secrets.
