SUSPENSE COPY ISBN Superbly performed in alternating monologues by narrators Rowe and Salter, Stonex’s ( The Lamplighters) taut tale grabs listeners from its first line and doesn’t let up until a shocking twist at the end. Shelf Awareness for Readers for Friday, December 19, 2025
Latest News Picture it: a dozen people gathered in a cozy living room, candles flickering on the window sill, a table spread with cheese, nuts, and sweets, mulled wine warming on the stove as the scent of cinnamon and cloves wafts around the room, and at the center of it all, piles of books ready to be traded. A friend of mine often hosts this kind of book exchange during the cold season, welcoming friends into her home to share what we've read throughout the year.
The Sunshine Man
Emma Stonex follows up her international bestseller, THE LAMPLIGHTERS, with a top-notch literary thriller featuring complex, believable characters. THE SUNSHINE MAN opens with a chilling statement from one of our narrators, Birdie Keller: “The week I shot a man clean through the head began like any other.” It will not be until the end of this tense novel that readers learn and fully understand the implications of that declaration. Let’s just say that Birdie is a middle-aged woman on a mission.
Suspenseful 'Sunshine Man' has murder in mind
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... It might be the best opening line of a novel this year: “The week I shot a man clean through the head started like any other.” That’s how Emma Stonex’s “The Sunshine Man” starts. Her followup to “The Lamplighters” alternates between two perspectives. One is the person who’s speaking in that opening line: Birdie, a British woman who’s so focused on her violent plan that she barely pauses to tell us that she has a husband and kids waiting at home.
'Sunshine Man' has two protagonists; one wants to kill the other
It might be the best opening line of a novel this year: "The week I shot a man clean through the head started like any other." That's how Emma Stonex's "The Sunshine Man" starts. Her followup to "The Lamplighters" (a book club favorite - or at least, a favorite of my book club) alternates between two perspectives.

THE SUNSHINE MAN
This thriller demonstrates on nearly every page the power of the written word. On the day of a prisoner’s release, a woman sets out to settle an old score. “The week I shot a man clean through the head began like any other.” With that opening sentence, Stonex plunges us into the mind and world of Bridget “Birdie” Keller, a wife and mother in the rural countryside of Wiltshire, England.
Authors' Notes: Emma Stonex recommends 5 claustrophobic thrillers you won't want to escape
05/05/2026 2 minutes to read The author of The Lamplighterson the dark appeal of feeling trapped, and five books that will hold you captive. 05/05/2026 2 minutes to read While I was working on my new novel The Sunshine Man, it struck me that I’m drawn to writing about people in confined spaces. In The Lamplighters, my characters lived in close quarters on a tower lighthouse in the middle of the sea; in The Sunshine Man, my male lead James has spent his life in and out of prison.

Mixed up by design
“A mystery, a love story and a ghost story, all at once. Wonderful.” S.J. Watson The disappearance of three lighthouse keepers from an island in the Outer Hebrides in 1900, which became known as the Flannan Isles Vanishing, inspired Emma Stonex’ debut novel The Lamplighters. How and why did three men just disappear? The mystery has never been solved, and it’s been great fodder for films and books ever since.

The Lamplighters
In December 1900, three lighthouse keepers --- Arthur Black, Bill Walker and Vincent Bourne --- disappeared from a remote rock light on the island of Eilean Mòr in the Outer Hebrides. However, she had a love affair with lighthouses and the coast that began with childhood holidays to the Isle of Wight.

7 of the Best Mystery Novels Set by the Sea
I might argue that the sea is literature’s greatest character, living as she does among the best mysteries ever written. And yet she is modest. She rarely takes center stage. Instead, she washes around the drama’s edges, an ever-present, ever-changing companion. She is a shining, shifting backdrop, quietly reflecting all that’s worth knowing about the story and its players. There is no better setting for a mystery than the sea.
Forever Trespassing Into History: An Author’s Reflections on Retelling Historical Episodes as Fiction
Ten years ago, I came across a true story that enthralled me like no other: the disappearance of three lighthouse keepers from a remote post in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, over Christmas 1900. The mystery itself was fascinating enough—the abandoned, ghostly lighthouse; two stopped clocks; and the Principal Keeper’s weather log recounting a terrible storm when there had been no such thing—but the setting made it irresistible.
How I Balanced My Passion With Being A New Mum
Before I had children, parents told me, like weary travellers from another planet, ‘Everything changes when you have a baby; the world changes, your perspective changes, you’ll change.’ It’s true that parenthood is a seismic shift. It’s massive and ground-breaking and terrifying and miraculous. After a PCOS diagnosis in my twenties, and a miscarriage between the births of my daughters, I know how very lucky I am to have two children.

Review by Karen B, Reviewer Last updated on 4 Feb 2021 My Recommendation This has to be near the top of all the great booksI've read so far this year. Inspired by a haunting true story, it explores the mysterious disappearance of three lighthouse keepers from the notorious Maiden. Arthur, Bill and Vince have spent weeks on duty, but when their relief ship arrives just after Christmas, 1972, it finds the lighthouse door locked and no trace of the men.
