Cost-effective glass fiber battery enclosure to combat EV weight issues
Germany-headquartered materials specialist Evonik says it has developed, as part of a consortium of companies, a lightweight and cost-effective battery concept for e-mobility solutions. Its holistic battery system concept is said to offer the automotive industry a safer and more energy-efficient lightweight alternative to heavier metal-based, or higher-priced carbon fiber reinforced plastic, battery housings.
Audi shows off lightweight Formula E motor-inverter
With major OEMs getting increasingly involved in the Formula E race series, many are using it as an opportunity to push development of cutting-edge electric motor and inverter technology. In the case of Audi, it has taken the unusual step of making public details of the powertrain that will be fitted to its FE07 contender. “The Audi e-tron FE07 has an all-new electric powertrain that was developed in-house for the first time,” explained Stefan Aicher, head of development, e-Drive, at Audi Sport.
NAWA electrode tech promises battery performance boost
Currently one of the major limitations of battery power, energy and lifecycle is the design and material used for the electrode. Existing electrodes have relatively low electrical, thermal and ionic conductivity, along with poor mechanical behavior when discharged and recharged, and can also suffer from early delamination and degradation leading to safety and lifecycle issues.
Consortium to invest in structural battery enclosure development
A new consortium, led by the UK arm of global aluminum product manufacturer Constellium, will invest £15m (US$18.3m) into the development of structural aluminum battery enclosures. The recent announcement could aid future widespread public adoption of EVs through cost reduction.
Mercedes details e-turbo technology
The MGU-H energy recovery technology currently deployed in Formula 1 is often cited as being irrelevant to road car development but Mercedes-AMG looks set to prove that assertion wrong as it is in the final stages of developing an electric exhaust gas turbocharger for automotive use, which both harnesses waste exhaust heat energy while also improving turbocharger response.
