We grew up from childhood hating, cursing Jews
Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Ensaf Haidar. I am the wife of Raif Badawi, a prisoner of conscience who is now serving his seventh year behind dark, cold prison walls in Saudi Arabia. Two days after the horrific Charlie Hebdo massacre, my husband was dragged from his jail cell in Jeddah, brought to a square in front of Al-Jafali Mosque, and administered the first phase – 50 lashes – of a public flogging. His crime?
Opinion | Saudi Arabia’s Chance to Create a Liberal Kingdom (Published 2018)
Op-Ed Contributor Jan. 5, 2018 A woman behind the wheel in March 2014 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of a campaign to defy the country’s ban on female drivers.Credit...Hasan Jamali/Associated Press I was astonished when, in late September, Saudi Arabia decided to allow women to drive, putting an end to an old, discriminatory practice. This was only one of several cautious social reforms that have been introduced in the country.

Reform might not have been possible there without the activists and intellectuals who struggled and suffered over the years.

The whole world knows the face of the young man with the bright black eyes. He is in the process of becoming an icon, a symbol, similar to the famous photo of Che Guevara. The face is that of Raif Badawi, who was nominated for the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize.

My family’s ‘inferno of unbearable torture’ - dealing with Raif Badawi’s flogging
By now, millions of people around the world have come to know my husband Raif Badawi’s name. All of this attention is encouraging, but the reasons why have shocked me to my core. Raif was arrested in our country Saudi Arabia three years ago today just because he expressed his ideas – he took to his keyboard and started his own website. He is a person who loves life and adores freedom, and for this he has received the harshest of sentences.
Raif Badawi is my husband, and our family is trapped in an inferno of unbearable torture

U.S. should press for release of Saudi blogger
On June 17, 2012, my husband, Raif Badawi, the father of my three children and my best friend, was arrested in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia. For nearly three years, as he has languished in prison, my family has been trapped in a nightmare. Raif is a man of principle and a respected activist in Saudi Arabia. In 2008, he started a blog where readers could openly discuss politics, religion and other social issues. But in Saudi Arabia, one can pay an unthinkable price simply for blogging.
Opinion: Saudi Arabia’s continued imprisonment of Raif Badawi is shameful
Any environment hostile to humans quickly becomes hellish. Saudi Arabia is the land of a million clerics, the only country in the world where women are barred from driving and where rights are repressed in the name of religion. It is a country ruled by Islamic law that states that any one who deviates from it should be killed. My husband Raif Badawi was jailed for expressing his opinion.
Wife of Jailed Saudi Blogger: My Husband Is a Victim of the Thought Police
The wife of Saudi Arabia’s most famous jailed blogger speaks out on her husband’s draconian detention. My husband, Ra'if Badawy, has been in prison in Saudi Arabia since 2012 for disrespecting Islam. At first, he was sentenced to execution for being an apostate. In May, his sentence was reduced to 10 years in prison, a fine of $100,000 and 1,000 lashes. He is to be lashed 50 times each Friday after prayers until it reaches 1,000 lashes. Ra'if is not a criminal. He is not a murderer or a rapist.
