Leveraging the Red List of Ecosystems for action on coral reefs through the Kunming‐Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
1 INTRODUCTION The need to address ongoing loss of ecosystems has been recognized through an explicit goal to conserve ecosystems in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, 2022). This multi-lateral treaty on biodiversity comprises four goals and 23 targets, as well as a monitoring framework consisting of 26 indicators to track progress.
10 years of decision‐making for biodiversity conservation actions: A systematic literature review
1 INTRODUCTION Despite the substantial effort and investment into the conservation of species and ecosystems, biodiversity loss is accelerating (C. N. Johnson et al., 2017). The list of threatened species keeps growing, with over a million species threatened by extinction, and many species expected to be lost within two decades (Díaz et al., 2019; WWF 2020).
Recreational vessel networks reveal potential hot spots for marine pest introduction and spread
1 INTRODUCTION The abundance of invasive marine species has been consistently increasing over the past two centuries, with a third of all invasions occurring between 1970 and 2014 (Seebens et al., 2017). Vessels, the most prominent pathway for marine NIS introductions (Molnar et al., 2008; Ruiz et al., 1997), have their traffic projected to increase between 240% and 1,209% by 2050 (Sardain et al., 2019).
Strengthening resilience potential assessments for coral reef management
1 INTRODUCTION Coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse and valuable ecosystem types in the world (Adey, 2000; Anthony et al., 2017) but are also among the most threatened (Bellwood et al., 2019; Burke et al., 2011; Halpern et al., 2015; Hoegh-Guldberg et al., 2017) due to climate-driven and local pressures increasing in magnitude and frequency (Anthony et al., 2017; Beyer et al., 2018; Costa et al., 2020).
Leveraging the Red List of Ecosystems for national action on coral reefs through the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
Abstract Countries have committed to conserving and restoring ecosystems after signing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) will serve as a headline indicator to track progress of countries towards achieving this goal, and to guide action across the GBFs targets.
Integrating regional conservation priorities for multiple objectives into national policy
Abstract Multinational conservation initiatives that prioritize investment across a region invariably navigate trade-offs among multiple objectives. It seems logical to focus where several objectives can be achieved efficiently, but such multi-objective hotspots may be ecologically inappropriate, or politically inequitable.
Adaptive pathways of coral populations on the Great Barrier Reef

Integrating regional conservation priorities for multiple objectives into national policy
We collated spatial data for biodiversity, socio-economic and climate features from open and closed sources (Supplementary Table 1), and explore regional conservation benefits using the spatial conservation decision support tool Marxan (freely available at http://www.uq.edu.au/marxan/)17 using 17, 264 planning units 10 × 10 km in size.
