Opinion: For your own future, encourage passage of End of Life Options Act Original
Eric J. Ruby Thank you to the Taunton Gazette staff for selecting Claudia Chiappa’s article, “State divided over death with dignity,” for publication on Jan. 12. We are going to die someday. The manner, time, and place may not be of our choosing, but for those with a terminal illness one option may allow that to be possible: medical aid in dying. It can be a choice along with palliative care, hospice care, spiritual guidance, counseling, and pain relief.
Opinion: Not only masks, but also vaccinations should be mandated for public schools
Eric J. Ruby Our hospitals are being faced with surges of the unvaccinated by the highly aggressive and infectious Delta variant of Covid. Vaccination is the best way to return to our normal lives and will stop the spread. Mask wearing flattens the curve of disease until more eligible can be immunized to protect those who cannot.

The Taunton Gazette verifies and reviews all letters to the editor we receive. The letters represent the views of the letter writers, not those of The Taunton Gazette. Letter to the Editor: Keep momentum going for spinal cord injury awareness
Wednesday will mark the 15th year of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day at the State House. Those paralyzed have an opportunity to make great progress in the science of recovery as funding is almost 20 times what it was last year and equal to what the fund received in the last 10 years. Speakers on Wednesday will elaborate on their research. The Public Health Department will update those attending with data and process. Networking in the SCI community is empowering.
Guest Opinion: DPH needs to stop Steward's closure of Morton maternity program
Eric J. Ruby Editor's Note: The following is the text of a recorded video message from longtime Taunton pediatrician Eric Ruby that played at Friday's public health forum at Taunton's Holiday Inn about the closure of Morton Hospital's maternity and nursery program.Sometimes we are faced with decisions that tug at our heart strings. I have two loves, my family and my profession. The blizzard in early January fell on the weekend I was to visit my pregnant daughter and her family in Colorado.
DR. ERIC RUBY: Death is not the enemy, inhumanity is
I respect the personal and professional opinions of Dr. Mark J. Rollo, M.D., who opposes medical aid in dying, which he chooses to call physician assisted suicide. Each of us has our own story and philosophy on end-of-life care. This is mine. My father loved life and wanted to live it to the fullest.

Guest Opinion: Public health will benefit from sound regulation of marijuana
Eric J. Ruby Editor's Note: This is an abridged version of an opinion piece that Eric J. Ruby has written in an argument for the passage of Massachusetts Ballot Question 4. To read the entire argument, click here. With all due respect to Taunton’s City Council and Boston officials, their position against the legalization of marijuana is overly politically cautious and well-intentioned, but misses the points of their commitment to the public and the opportunity to be visionary leaders.

As a pediatrician in Taunton for 39 years, I take pride in my city and encourage healthy lifestyles among city residents and their children.
