Supergirl Archives, Volumes One and Two (SPOILERS)
"I'm just going tp go over a few points that I believe we haven't really covered yet." I will follow the same tack. BTW, remember the Action Comics #252 cover statue from the '90s? The Superman figure is detachable, and some have been known to use it as a Christmas tree ornament, hung by its foot. "Why are you wearing a super-costume like mine? How did you know my name? How can you speak the Earth language so well? And... and...??" You'd think Superman was from Ft. Lee, New Jersey.
Supergirl Archives, Volumes One and Two (SPOILERS)
Action Comics 2252: (May 1959) "The Supergirl from Krypton!" Writing by Otto Binder Art by Al Plastino (OK, we have gone over this one pretty thoroughly and fairly recently, so I'm just going tp go over a few points that I believe we haven't really covered yet.) 1)The story begins with Clark alone in the Planet newsroom. How often is there only one person in a newspaper office during the day?
Supergirl Archives, Volumes One and Two (SPOILERS)
Superman #123: (August 1958) “The Three Magic Wishes: The Girl of Steel” Writing by Otto Binder Art by Dick Sprang and Stan Kaye (I know that we’ve gone over this story in Jeff’s Silver Age Superman thread a few weeks back, so apologies if I go over well-trodden ground.) 1)Superman rescues an “archeologist” (sic) who wants to give him something in gratitude. Supes suggests that he should give Jimmy a souvenir, instead.
How do you solve a problem like Supergirl?
Jeff of Earth-J has a lively discussion going on in "The Silver Age Superman", regarding Supergirl and how Superman did and perhaps alternatively should have handled the Girl of Steel when the 15 year old arrived on Earth. Obviously, Superman created an identity for her and placed her in an orphanage, to be used as his secret weapon, But there is a question - should he have adopted her? Should he have placed her in Kandor to live with a foster family of her own people?

My age was still in single digits, but thankfully well pass the diaper stage, when the original Woodstock was held. I love the music from that era so if they ever perfect time travel, attending is definitely on my chrono bucket list. What a grand idea. Roll on time travel. I would set the controls for the following:- 28 October 1962, the Liverpool Empire, where the Beatles supported the headline act of Little Richard. Richard sang rock 'n roll for the 1st time in 4 years.

The Silver Age Superman
Superman is widely considered to have entered the Silver Age with Action Comics #241 (June 1958) and Superman #122 (July 1958). Unlike the Flash and Green Lantern (for example), Superman was published continuously from the Golden Age into the Silver Age. Whereas it's easy to differentiate the Golden Age Flash and Green Lantern from their Silver Age counterparts, what is it that sets Action comics #241 apart from #240 and Superman #122 from #121? What happened in 1958 which led to such a change?
A Cover A Day: Nominations, Themes and Statistics
It seems to me that it would make a great deal of sense to slot an Artist Homage month dedicated to John Romita Sr into July and bump "Railways" back to August, as Jeff suggests. This would mean that the current round of voting is for themes to start in September. Would that be acceptable to the assembled company? Anyone who has already voted should be entitled to change their votes in the light of this, if they wish.
John Romita Sr. -- R.I.P.
John Romita's Spider-Man is "my" Spider-Man, and somewhere buried in my collection is a scrapbook of the first year of the Amazing Spider-Man newspaper comic strip. Romita drew the dailies and Sundays, and that was a time when you couldn't count on such things being collected in a trade paperback, so I dutifully cut the strips out of the paper each day and saved them myself.
Happy Superman Day 85th anniversary!
Today is the 85th anniversary of Action Comics #1 - and there's been no announcements, no anniversary notices, no celebrations at all. I thought I'd at least make note of it!

If I may, I'll update the list of possible future themes to incorporate a few newly-suggested topics. The ballot paper now includes the following: Month-Number based (1-12 in Jan-Dec 2024). Use any rationale you like for picking a cover (number of characters, issue number, publication date, number featured on the cover, etc). Could be extended beyond 12 if it's sufficiently popular/successful.

Apologies for not being here yesterday; last night we were out watching a Tina Turner tribute act. I see that there's been a couple of "Sheena-Queen of the Jungle" covers posted recently. Following the sad demise of the late, great Ms Turner, I've been reading a number of obituaries about her in the last week. As you'll know she was born Anna Mae Bullock, but Ike, her manager and husband, told her to rename herself Tina, because it rhymed with Sheena and he was a huge Queen of the Jungle fan.

Ok, how about this for an idea. We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day. This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent. What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme. I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".

Okay, it's taking me a quintet of covers to make 29 today, but since it's also Memorial Day... Cover 1: One lone soldier against a trio of enemies in World War 2. Cover 2: A unit of 5 trying to escape unknown/unseen snipers. Cover 3: One lone soldier trying to prevent his unit from being ambushed by enemy artillery. I count 12 visible around the tank for 14. Cover 4: A friendly reminder that women have honorably served in the military for decades... and last, but certainly not least, Cover 5.

Can't believe I lost another one today. Surprisingly from the same title, but I still won't say which. Yet like I did say yesterday, to make it this far without that happening is amazing. Meanwhile, 28 in 2. Cover 1: A Golden Age classic with Batman and Robin, Kay Kyser in Professor garb, 2 booth technicians, 3 musicians (don't forget the pianist), one gunman and 5 shocked audience members looking on for a total of 14.

"Four figures (including the two children) are not identified." Funny, I've never thought about those kids before (and, no, I don't know who they're supposed to be, either). I also cannot identify the guy standing behind Saturn Girl with his arm raised but, from his placement in the crowd and his collar, I suspect he's one of the LSH.

"While you're handing down rulings..." ON FLOATING HEADS: I personally would include floating heads as "cover characters." Having said that, though, I have found enough of them that I had planned to put up "Floating Heads" as a monthly theme the next time nominations are discussed (which would make the Doctor Who poster from yesterday a "floating head" rather than a "one" or a "fourteen." Similarly, I would count "JLA/JSA team-ups where they'd have the characters' heads along the sides on the...

The Greatest Comic Book of All Time
Thanks for bumping this back up to the top, Luke. I am acutely aware that I posted this topic, then didn't answer it myself. That's because I couldn't really narrow it down. Also, what I tend to remember as the "greatest" stories from my youth are multipart storylines, what some todat would describe as "arcs," such as "The Kree/Skrull War" or "The Stone Tablet Saga." To make matters worse, earlier this month I noted how annoyed this question makes me when asked by mundanes.

JD DeLuzio said: Gold Key was no EC, but sometimes their horror managed to hit a nerve. One of the comics from the Silver Age that I made a point of keeping wasn't a Gold Key but a Dell. Universal Pictures Presents Dracula - the Mummy & Other Stories (NOV63). The story that struck me as one-of-a-kind was "The Long Wait." It was reprinted from Tales from the Tomb #1 (OCT62).

The List of American (U.S.A.) Patriotic Super-Heroes
I think the Red Cross you found was the one I meant. Torch of Liberty (Dark Horse) Red Blazer and Sparky, from cover text stories in Harvey'sAll-New Comics -This character first appeared in comics stories in Pocket Comics, but wore a different costume there. The All-New Comics version had stars and a torch symbol. Capt. Red Cross was a one-shot cover text story character, but his story has comics panels, as if a comics story was prepared.

This is why I led off with the statement "IMO." It will guide what I post. I'm not saying everyone has to agree with me. I agree that a winged human, like Angel of the X-Men, fits this month. If Hawkman is on a cover with a winged gorilla or some actual birds, that fits, too. If he's on a cover with just the Shadow Thief, no. Why? Because Hawkman's wings aren't part of him. Every image of Donald Duck (and Woody Woodpecker) I've seen has arms, hands and fingers, not wings.
R.I.P. Joe Giella
Joe Giella died on March 21, 2023, at the age of 94. He received the Inkpot Award in 1996. In 2016, he received the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award at the Harvey Awards. In 2017, Giella was the Guest of Honor at the 2017 Inkwell Awards ceremony at HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC (June 2017). In 2018, Giella was awarded the Inkwell Awards Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award for his many years of inking. [From WIKIPEDIA}.

Feb 2023 1596/1 Doctors, Nurses and Hospitals 24 292 Mar 2023 1620/5 Detectives & Murder Mysteries Apr 2023 Birds and Winged Creatures May 2023 Strength in Numbers Perhaps surprisingly, February's theme comes quite a long way down the table of number of responses. With 292 replies, it's in 20th equal position, 19 other themes having a higher count. It's level with "MST3K" from September 2020. Of course, February is a short month.

Moderators of the Round Table

Who has played Superman in live action?
In fairness, that was Jeff. Fixed! Let us not forget Henry Cavill's cameo appearance in Black Adam. Fixed! Dan Ackroyd played a version of Superman in a Saturday Night Live skit many moons ago. I left off skits, commercials and impressions. On a practical side, adding every skit, impression and TV commercial would make any list too lengthy to be useful. Further, I don't know of a way to make sure such a list was comprehensive -- I'd miss something (or Wiki would).

Before I post my first cover for February, a couple of quick responses in regards to yesterday's comments. January 31 was still technically Trial/Courts month and I've yet to find a medical doctor facing malpractice or any other legal issues, so I thought a Time Lord would do.
The Greatest Comic Book of All Time
I have two greatest comics ever (I'm old, I collect a lot of debris.) But besides Fantastic Four 51 (the BEST comic ever), at the time I read Superman Annual #11, I thought it was unbeatable. Alan Moore got what I thought was EVERYTHING in it; Batman and Robin and Wonder Woman. Superman's Fortress of Solitude. A return to Krypton, and appearances by Lyla Lerrol and Kara. And to cap it off - a knock down dragout fight between Superman and Mongul.
