Articles by Eric Lawrence

He has a great affection for music, particularly American classics like Frank Sinatra, and tells us tales about wooing women and launching his career. He currently hosts the Emmy-nominated web series Larry King Now. Hosted by Eric J. Lawrence.
Field Music counted Prince as a fan. Hear why on their 2010 MBE live session
I remember reading somewhere that most people establish their music tastes by the age of 27, when they will have found the bands that will remain their favorites for the rest of their lives. Well, KCRW DJs (and probably many of our listeners, too) are no ordinary people! We’re always on the lookout for new sounds that can join the pantheon of favorites from our younger days, however difficult that can be in a corporate buyout/plastic production/online streaming era.
Remembering Hal Willner, an omnivorous mind whose genius went far beyond Saturday Night Live
The news that music producer Hal Willner, 64, had passed away Tuesday from complications related to COVID-19 hit me pretty hard. In these perilous times, we are seeing the virus’ monstrous death-toll creep into the realms of familiar public figures and prominent musicians. And while beloved Grammy Award-winner John Prine died from the virus on the same day – a terrible loss in its own right – we were at least alerted that he had been gravely ill and admitted to the hospital the week before.
Terry Jones | Guest DJ Project
Terry Jones is beloved by comedy fans everywhere as a member of the ground breaking troupe Monty Python’s Flying Circus. He’s also an acclaimed writer, director, poet and historian. He brought in a few of his favorite tunes to share in his Guest DJ set, from Paul Simon to Tony Pastor. Terry's latest film project, Absolutely Anything starring Simon Pegg, will be out next year. Banner Image Credit: Larry Hirshowitz Tracklist: 1. John Lennon - "Imagine" 2. Tony Pastor - "Five Salted Peanuts" 3.
Pixies | Morning Becomes Eclectic
Alt-rock pioneers Pixies released their seventh album Beneath the Eyrie last September. They performed a special set of new tracks and old gems and spoke with KCRW's Eric J. Lawrence about the new album and their connection to Los Angeles. Photos by Elli Lauren.
Track Premiere: Guided By Voices 'Volcano'
Rock and roll has always been about excess, where the listener thrills to bacchanalian tales sung by their favorite electric troubadour. But as it enters its seventh decade, this beloved popular musical art form has been diluted by any number of unrewarding additions and reductions. Thankfully, there are still those champions who fly the R&R flag proudly, among them such (relative) young bucks as Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees.
Huell Howser | Guest DJ Project
Huell Howser is a beloved television personality who explores the natural wonders and people of our fine state as the host of “California’s Gold”. He dedicated his Guest DJ set to 5 country women he loves – Dolly, Tammy, Loretta, Brenda and June. As always, his gregarious personality shines through as he explores these songs close to his heart. California’s Gold can be seen locally on KCET. For more: http://www.calgold.com/ Tracks 1. Loretta Lynn - One's on the way 2.
John Legend Holiday Guest DJ Set | Morning Becomes Eclectic
John Legend is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award winning singer, songwriter, producer, actor and philanthropist. He recently shared some of his favorite Christmas songs with our resident Christmas music enthusiast Eric J. Lawrence in this special holiday guest dj set for KCRW.
Remembering Ric Ocasek (The Cars): The master of power pop
You might be surprised to learn, as I was, that Ric Ocasek of the Cars, who passed away this weekend in his New York City apartment at the age of 75, was older or the same age as any of the members of Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Kinks or The Who.
Track Premiere: Guided By Voices 'Heavy Like The World' + Album Announcement
Writing up an announcement for the impending release of a new Guided By Voices album is fraught with danger. By the time you put it all together and publish the information, Robert Pollard and his merry band of musical pranksters already have the next two albums in the bank, ready to go! Nonetheless, we are pleased to introduceSweating the Plague, GBV’s third album release of 2019 (not to mention their two EPs released this year), which comes out 10/25.
Track Premiere: Marco Benevento 'Let It Slide'
Keyboardist Marco Benevento rarely stands still. Over the past 15 years, he’s dabbled in a little bit of just about everything, from experimental jazz to jam-band grooves, all the while collaborating with the likes of AC Newman, Kevin Morby, John McEntire , Brad Mehldau, and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, not to mention running his own record label, the Royal Potato Family.
Texas psych rock legend Roky Erickson has passed away
Roky Erickson, co-founder of psych rock band 13th Floor Elevators has passed away at the age of 71, the Austin American-Statesmen has reported. Erickson is one of those seminal figures in pop music history who might escape notice from the bulk of today's listening audience, but who actually was responsible for laying the groundwork for a huge chunk of what they actually are familiar with.
