2025 Dry Processing & Bulk Solids Handling Industry Trends & Outlook
Powder & Bulk Solids asked Eric Maynard, vice president, Jenike & Johanson Inc., Tyngsboro, MA, for his thoughts on the current state of the dry processing and bulk solids handling industry. In 2015, 2019, and 2021 we asked Maynard to give his perspective on both the markets that make up the dry processing and bulk solids handling field, as well as the equipment and technologies that are used to service these markets.
Challenges, Changes, and Successes
For some historical context, when Powder & Bulk Solids published its first issue in 1983, Ronald Reagan was completing his first term as US president, and the global economy was starting to emerge from the stagflation of the 1970s. The global population was approximately 4.7 billion1 (half of what it is today), and Space Shuttle missions were starting to take astronauts to orbit regularly.
Impact of Particle-Size Control on Bulk-Solids Flow Behavior - Chemical Engineering
Crushing and screening of solids are essential to many solids-handling processes, but engineers must be mindful about how those actions will affect flow behavior of the bulk material When it comes to processing bulk solids, (particle) size matters. Almost all industries rely on some sort of particle-size control within their processes, whether it is comminution (reduction of particle size by crushing, grinding or milling) or screening (separating materials based on particle size).
Best practice for evaporation processes
Evaporation is a process where a material moves from its liquid state to a vapor (or gas). The most common example of evaporation seen in everyday life is the transfer of water from the earth’s surface to the atmosphere as part of the water cycle. When liquids evaporate, and materials which they contain in solution or suspension are left behind, this becomes a useful process to concentrate solutions or to help separate materials.
Overcoming challenges of feeding bulk solid materials into and out of dryers
It is commonly said that more than 70% of manufactured products in the world involve a bulk solid material at some point during the manufacturing process, either as a raw material or as an intermediate or final product. However, proper design of bulk solids handling and processing equipment is rarely covered in engineering courses, leaving process engineers struggling to understand how to achieve efficient, safe and reliable flow of these materials.
Automated Blending: A Productive Path to Labor Savings?
Most manufacturing operations involving powders and bulk solids are feeling the trifecta “pinch” of increased costs for raw materials, supply chain delivery delays, and labor shortages. When it comes to mixing of bulk solids, is there an opportunity for your operation to implement continuous blending to help reduce labor costs and increase throughput efficiency? Mixers and blenders are wide ranging in shapes, sizes, and modes of operation, but they are generally either batch or continuous.

State of the Industry: Dry Processing & Bulk Solids Handling
Image courtesy of Pixabay Two experts provide a view of what is in store for the dry processing and bulk solids handling industry in 2022. Eric Maynard and Mason Parker of Jenike & Johanson | Nov 19, 2021 After nearly two years of upheaval, we’re finally beginning to get a sense of the new normal in a post-pandemic world. So what does that mean for the dry processing and bulk solids handling industry? Related

Safely storing and handling bulk solids - Processing Magazine
Each year tens if not hundreds of individuals are severely injured, and many are killed, when working in and around bulk solids storage and handling facilities. Silos fail, stockpiles collapse, material that is stuck to bin walls falls off, workers get sucked into hidden cavities and combustible dusts explode.
Achieving a 300% speedup in ETL with Spark - Cloudera Engineering Blog
A common design pattern often emerges when teams begin to stitch together existing systems and an EDH cluster: file dumps, typically in a format like CSV, are regularly uploaded to EDH, where they are then unpacked, transformed into optimal query format, and tucked away in HDFS where various EDH components can use them. When these file dumps are large or happen very often, these simple steps can significantly slow down an ingest pipeline.
Fundamentals of Bulk Solids Mixing and Blending
Mixing and blending of bulk solids is a common processing step in many industries. For example, in pharmaceutical manufacturing of solid dosage formulations (tablets or capsules), small amounts of a powdered active drug are carefully blended with excipients, such as sugar, starch, cellulose, lactose and lubricants. With foods, many powder-form consumer products result from custom mixed batches; consider cake mix, ice tea and dry seasonings.
