Eric Nuss spent his early childhood in Omaha before moving with his family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he completed high school. His interest in science and athletics led him to Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education with a concentration in science and athletic coaching. He later pursued his MBA at the University of Iowa, combining educational skills with business training.
This mix of teaching and business education prepared him for a career that blended leadership, consulting, and the ability to create systems that support growth. His academic journey laid the foundation for his future work with individuals, teams, and organizations.
Eric began his career as a middle school teacher in Colorado Springs. Teaching provided him with experience in leadership, communication, and building relationships. After several years in education, he transitioned into sales and sales management, gaining valuable insights into business operations and leadership in a corporate environment.
He also coached youth baseball, emphasizing teamwork, accountability, and discipline. His coaching style helped players develop skills both on and off the field. These same values later shaped his consulting philosophy, guiding his approach to helping professionals build stronger organizations.
For more than two decades, he has been involved in consulting and advising within the dental industry. Eric's work has included helping practices navigate acquisitions, practice integration, and phases of rapid growth. He has guided strategy, leadership development, and operational oversight across finance, compliance, and human resources.
His role has been to create systems that enable providers to remain dedicated to patient care while their practices become more stable and valuable. By combining clinical excellence with strong business systems, he has supported practice owners in achieving growth and long-term success.
He now serves as Strategic Advisor at XpoDental, continuing to help practices develop sustainable strategies that prepare them for future opportunities.
One of the challenges he has sought to address is the lack of business leadership training in the dental field. Many doctors are highly skilled clinically but often struggle to build practices that deliver lasting enterprise value. This has led to fewer successful practice sales and limited retirement options for many owners.
Eric has collaborated with doctors to bridge this gap by developing scalable models, designing systems that support financial health, and implementing strategies for employee retention and engagement. He has also designed exit strategies that protect the value of practices and prepare owners for smooth transitions.
His approach encourages leaders to act decisively, take responsibility, and learn from their experiences. His guidance has helped many adapt to challenges and build more resilient practices.
Eric's achievements have been recognized widely. He was profiled in Forbes magazine for creating and expanding Henry Schein's Business Solutions Division and for founding the Dental Business Institute (DBI). This recognition highlighted his role in introducing business education at a higher level into dentistry.
Dental Economics also recognized him for leading the development and national rollout of DBI, which reshaped how dentists prepare for practice growth and transition. He has authored four textbooks used as the DBI curriculum and published numerous articles on practice growth, mergers and acquisitions, and scaling strategies in publications such as Dental Economics, Dentistry Today, Inside Dentistry, and Dental Tribune.
Eric Nuss has also been a keynote speaker and panelist at major events, including the Dykema DSO Conference and national leadership summits. His talks, research, and articles have been shared widely in the industry. As the Founding Director of Henry Schein Business Solutions and DBI, he earned recognition for programs that continue to impact practices nationwide.
Outside of Eric's business career, he has also been active in coaching. At STiKS Baseball Academy, where he worked for nearly four years, he focused on player development, discipline, and teamwork. His efforts supported athletes in both performance and personal growth.
He also coached boys' basketball at Southeast Christian School for almost two years. His emphasis on fundamentals, communication, and leadership helped young athletes succeed while also learning values that extended beyond sports. These roles reflect his consistent focus on developing people through guidance and discipline.
During college, he studied abroad in Tanzania, where exposure to another culture reshaped his views on materialism, faith, and frugality. The experience gave him perspective and humility, which continue to influence his personal and professional life.
Eric's blended family has also been a significant influence. Raising six children has taught him patience, flexibility, and empathy. These qualities have shaped his leadership style, helping him approach challenges with balance and understanding.
He resides in Parker, Colorado, with his wife and their six children. Their family life is filled with energy, with days spent on school activities, sports, travel, and quality time together. Whether attending games, having a family dinner, or traveling, these experiences remain central to his priorities.
Family continues to be the foundation of his perspective and the reason behind his work. His focus on building businesses that create freedom and balance reflects his belief in aligning professional goals with personal values. With a career rooted in education, leadership, and service, Eric Nuss remains committed to guiding others toward growth, opportunity, and lasting success.
