The impact of repeated bouts of shiftwork on rapid strength and reaction time in career firefighters
Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of repeated bouts of shiftwork on lower extremity maximal and rapid strength and reaction time in career firefighters. Thirty-five firefighters (3 females; 34.3 ± 9.1 years) performed a psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) and reactive maximal isometric strength assessment prior to and following a full shift rotation (three 24-hr on-off shifts).
Examination of muscle morphology and neuromuscular function in normal weight and overfat children aged 7 to 10 years
Neuromuscular function in young overweight/obese (OF) children is not well described. This study examined isometric and isokinetic leg extensor strength, muscle size (mCSA) and tissue composition as measured via echo intensity (mEI), and motor unit (MU) firing rates in normal weight (NW) and OF children aged 7 to 10 years. Fourteen NW (8 girls and 6 boys, BMI:15.8±1.4 kg/m2) and 15 OF (10 girls and 5 boys, BMI:20.8±2.3 kg/m2) children volunteered to perform this study.
The influence of subcutaneous fat on the relationship between body composition and ultrasound-derived muscle quality
Ultrasound echo intensity (EI) values are a popular assessment of muscle quality. The relationship between EI and total (%fat) and regional (%fat ) body composition was examined in 40 men, prior to and after accounting for subcutaneous fat thickness. Uncorrected EI values suggest that muscle quality improves (r = –0.329 to –0.224; P = 0.038–0.165) with greater %fat and %fat .
