Aug. 6’s state and federal primary elections in Tennessee saw relatively few big surprises, with one notable exception — former state Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher beating incumbent U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles to become the Republican candidate in Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District. “So apparently, ‘Hire a farmer’ resonated with the constituents of the 5th District,” Hatcher said to supporters at his election night event in Franklin at Leiper’s Fork Distillery’s House of Spirits.

Now Nashville-based Dowdle Construction Group is nearing completion of the conversion of a two-story, 80,000-square-foot former lumber mill, a project that ranks highly on that list — if anything due to its sheer size.

The topic is one for debate. Most Nashvillians likely would name Broadway/West End Avenue from First Avenue at the Cumberland River to Interstate 440 at Murphy Road as the city’s most important stretch of urban street.

No one could escape the jolt of mid-March. Sure, we could see the COVID-19 pandemic on the horizon, but few of us expected its arrival to be so sudden or its effects to be so brutal. In March, the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors reported a 3.4 percent increase over the same month in 2019, though obviously many of those sales were already in the pipeline when the tornado/disease double-whammy hit Middle Tennessee.

Nashville’s urban placemaking enthusiasts who treasure non-residential buildings designed in a traditional manner face a humbling reality. If a historic church building located within one of the city’s urban areas is demolished, that is one fewer traditional religious structure — with all its charming, beautiful and sometimes even grand architectural features — that local citizens can admire.

Post sister publication Nashville Scene reports the South Inglewood eatery announced the closing on social media. Fort Louise opened in summer 2017, operating from a small blue bungalow located next to Mitchell Delicatessen and with an address of 1304 McGavock Pike.
Micro city living
