What was your first job as a journalist?

San Francisco Chronicle -- my column on SFGate.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

We had an antique typewriter in my house when I was growing up - an Old Royal -- and I would pound away at it. with or without ribbon.

How is social media changing news?

The good: immediacy. The bad: not nearly enough fact checking.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

"Gus" Haynes from The Wire

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be a truth-teller

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

None comes to mind - but I'll let you know when one does.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is best. I do appreciate good manners. "Dear Ms. Sandberg" always gets me.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I'm not picky

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, but Clubhouse is interesting

Who do you wish followed you?

John McWhorter. I love linguistics.

Why did you become a journalist?

It was a natural professional segue. I always admired great writing and reporting.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, I didn't. The Torrey Pines Falconer really missed out on a budding journalist!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

So many! I've had a very successful column on CreditCards.com for years: Small Business Credit Profile.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Try your hardest to be objective
