Everyone's favorite (or favorite to hate) phenomenon spins up in fall and its strength throughout the season tends to have an influence on whether we shiver or saunter our way through winter. This year, it's getting knocked around early. So, quick vortex refresher. There are actually two of them.
How extreme drought conditions are impacting fall foliage in New England
Weekend New England foliage forecast with Yankee Magazine's Jim Salge Crisp autumn air has (briefly) made its presence felt over the past couple of days, and that has a lot of leaf tourists on alert for the weekend. What causes windy weather? It all starts with the sun.
Most times we ignore it, sometimes we fear it, but bottom line, wind is vital to the survival of our planet and is probably a bit more complex than you think. Simply put, wind is the movement of air. But what causes air to move in the first place? That is where it gets interesting. A world without wind Picture a world that was completely flat and motionless. This world has no changes in elevation, no changes in surface material (land vs. oceans etc).

Outdoor sports and events should be in OK shape. Just plan for a cool breeze coming in off the ocean and largely gray skies.

Cold Stretch Begins Second Half Of Winter, February Looks Milder Than Average
BOSTON (CBS) – Time to check your woodpile, make sure there’s still some gas in the snowblower, and glance at the calendar to see how long until pitchers and catchers report. We’re passing the midway point of winter as daylight increases and average temperatures start the slow climb toward spring and summer. Of course, we all know that process can take a while in New England. Every year is different though and it’s only natural to start wondering what we’ll be facing during the second half.
Winter Weather Forecast: Below Average Snowfall, Warmer Than Average Temperatures, WBZ-TV Weather Team Predicts
BOSTON (CBS) – Let’s be real – a winter outlook is an educated guess about future events months in advance. A lot can go wrong. The temperature tea leaves are a little easier to read, but in the snowfall department just one or two big events can greatly influence an entire season. Even years when we think the outlook is doing well (like 2017-18) a month like March can blow it all up.

Record Fall Warmth: An Unprecedented Autumn In New England
By Eric FisherOctober 20, 2021 at 8:59 pm BOSTON (CBS) – Sunshine, 70s, and a still growing garden. Doesn’t sound like late October in New England, but here we are! It wouldn’t be hyperbole to say there’s never been an autumn like this across the region. No frost on the pumpkin, a lot of green trees heading into Halloween week, and warm coastal waters. Crisp and cool fall has been overhead circling the tarmac somewhere and failed to touch down.
Flooding A Major Concern As Tropical Storm Henri Approaches Southern New England
By Eric FisherAugust 20, 2021 at 9:44 am BOSTON (CBS) – It’s all about the tropics right now, and not much of the news is good. Fred’s remnants brought a drenching 2-5” of rain across much of the area, particularly north and west of Boston Thursday. Now our attention turns to Henri, which could send an already drenching summer into the infamous category if things don’t change in the next couple of days. I think a look at the “wettest summer on record” leaderboard is instructive at this point.

Hurricane Bob Was The Last To Hit Southern New England 30 Years Ago, But It Wasn’t The Last Major One
By Eric FisherAugust 18, 2021 at 9:29 am BOSTON (CBS) – Hurricane Bob was the last “big one” in New England when it hit on August 19, 1991. But in the scheme of storms it really wasn’t a “big one.” Bringing the worst potential damaging winds and storm surge, major hurricanes category three or stronger have ripped through this part of the country. When one returns, it’ll be the first time we’ve been able to see it coming. But will we be any better prepared?
30 Years After Hurricane Bob Hit, Southern New England Still Waiting For The Next One
BOSTON (CBS) — The dog days of August 1991 were violently interrupted when the most powerful hurricane in decades reached the shores of New England. Hurricane Bob, arriving earlier than any other hurricane of record in New England, brought damage some had not seen since Carol and Edna in 1954. And the region hasn’t seen a landfall in the 30 years since. Bob had its start in the Bahamas, where it quickly gained strength and accelerated northward.
Eric Fisher letter: Contractors should watch where they park
I don't understand when you need work on your home or pool, certain contractors feel they are automatically welcome to park in your driveway, blocking your vehicles. Really! I would think they would ask first after all you picked them to do the work. One would think they could communicate a little better, sure it saves steps and time but being respectful and asking first speaks volumes.
Western And Central Massachusetts Mark 10 Years Since Devastating Tornado On June 1, 2011
By Eric FisherJune 1, 2021 at 6:00 am SPRINGFIELD (CBS) – Every spring and summer, thunderstorms flare up and move across New England. Lighting up the sky and bringing relief from heat, they’re usually more exciting than terrifying. But 10 years ago, one thunderstorm grew to a level not seen in decades. Over the course of 70 minutes, that storm would go on to ravage cities and towns along a 38-mile path from Westfield to Charlton. Three lives were taken, and 200 others were injured.
‘Above Average’ Hurricane Season Expected This Year, After Record 2020
By Eric FisherMay 20, 2021 at 5:30 pm BOSTON (CBS) – We’re known for our winter storms in New England. But even though they’re much less frequent, hurricanes are arguably the number one risk to property here with the capacity to inflict huge amounts of damage in a short amount of time. It’s been a while. The last hurricane to make landfall here was Bob – 30 years ago.
