Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Intern. Wasn't it for everyone?
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes.
How is social media changing news?
It's makes the featured image and headline do the talking. A good percentage of people will just look at those and start commenting.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Superman. The guy is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist yet still needs a second job to make ends meet.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Most hashtags are kinda oddly placed in trending news.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I usually just write and hope it works.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Rebelmouse, but we used WordPress for the longest time.
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook.
Who do you wish followed you?
Anyone really. Big, small, famous, no bodies in particular, people who love my stuff, and people who hate it.
Why did you become a journalist?
I kinda fell into it. People liked my stuff so I stayed.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Writing about the response to the Las Vegas shooting and how members of the military and veteran community sprung into action.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Learn proper spelling and punctuation. Your editor will thank you for it.
When's the best time to pitch you?
At a conference room. If they invited you, they've already made up their mind. Elevators and barrooms would annoy me if I were them.
What's your favorite drink?
Energy drinks.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Stuck in traffic, because - you know - I'm in LA.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Army Times.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Most people think military news is just the stuff happening on the front lines. It's not. It's an entire lifestyle.
