CHAR vs VARCHAR Memory Grants
Strings Were A Mistake While working with a client recently, we found that someone, at some point in time, probably during the original migration from Access, had chosen CHAR columns rather than VARCHAR columns. Okay, fine. How bad could it be? Bad enough that… A whole bunch of columns that only had a single character in them were stored in CHAR(1000) columns. Which was wildly inflating memory grants, and causing all sorts of nasty issues.
Why You Should Not Use SELECT *
A shorter post this week, but an important one. Last week, Erik Darling commented on my post saying that we shouldn't use , which was both amusing and accurate. Amusing, because a number of the example T-SQL queries in that post made use of this construct. Why was Erik's comment accurate? A lot of SQL Server and other RDBMS (relational database management systems) folks advise never to use , and it has become a running gag in my talks when I use in a demo and then tell my attendees not to use it.

Live Query Plans and Blocking - Brent Ozar Unlimited®
You’d think this would be cool After all, you’ve got a query plan being executed LIVE ON NATIONAL TELEVISION! But it’s not. It’s actually one of those weird reasons why you still need other ways of looking at DMVs for issues. Demo Library Let’s take a closer look! First, we need an index. Indexes are good for things, I’m told. CREATE INDEX ix_displayname ON dbo.Users (DisplayName); I mean, maybe not this index. It’s kind of okay for about one query, and it isn’t this one.
