Guest column: Public lands in name only - The Bulletin
Last year, politicians in Congress proposed selling off millions of acres of national public lands. An ideologically diverse coalition of public-lands lovers — from hunters and anglers to hikers and birdwatchers — was able to fend off that proposal. Confronted with the overwhelming unpopularity of direct and transparent public lands selloffs, politicians and their bureaucratic appointees in Washington, DC, have embraced a new tactic: cutting the public out.
Early treatment prevents neuronal loss in experimental status epilepticus: A magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging study
Status epilepticus was induced in rats with continuous hippocampal stimulation to determine if early treatment prevented damage. Rats treated with phenobarbital were compared to untreated controls for neuronal loss using n-acetyl aspartate (NAA) with MR spectroscopy. Treatment with phenobarbital at 1 h prevented loss of NAA signal that correlated with findings on histology.
Keeping public lands in public hands
This summer, an enormous wave of public outrage stopped a brazen attack on America’s shared natural heritage. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah tried to sneak into the “Big Beautiful Bill” a clause that would have mandated the sale of public lands in Oregon and across the West. The response was loud and bipartisan. Oregonians and people across the country rose up to say no. Every member of Oregon’s delegation, including Republican U.S. Rep.

What can we learn from Mexico’s nonviolent revolution of consciences?
Quietly, Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to Gandhian nonviolence, his effort to end poverty, and his push for a “radical revolution of values…from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society” crossed the U.S. border despite the walls. While the U.S. is mired in deep democratic decay, division and chaos, the Mexican people have given King’s ideas and actions new life south of the border.
Congress should oppose anti-science, anti-public lands bill
Erik Fernandez With a name like the “Fix Our Forests Act,” it should be a good thing for forests, wildlife, and the environment, right? Unfortunately, that is not the case with H.R. 471, aka the Fix Our Forests Act. A more accurate name for this legislation would be the “Clearcut Our Public Lands Act.” Proponents of the bill say it will reduce wildfire risk.

Guest Column: What to expect for public lands in 2024
There’s never a dull moment when it comes to public lands in Oregon, especially here on the Deschutes National Forest in Bend’s backyard. As we move into 2024, there are reasons to be optimistic as well as concerns to keep an eye out for. From local logging projects to legislation to policy changes, there’s a lot coming up. If you like all the aggressive logging happening around town as you head up toward Bachelor or up Skyliners Road, there’s more of that coming.
How we are winning teacher strikes with social justice unionism
In Sonoma County, California, there had not been a teachers’ strike for nearly 40 years prior to 2019, despite it being one of the most expensive places in the nation. As of 2018 not one of the 40 school districts in the county was paying their teachers above the statewide average pay despite many districts being amongst the most well funded in the state. Moreover, nearly half of students are on free or reduced lunch and Latino.
'Do Revenge': A Film Review
Looking into the 2022 remake of Mean Girls, with a twist of Strangers On A Train Cue the Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish soundtrack. Slap on the cutesy brightly-colored outfits every 3 minutes. Congratulations, you have finished 50% of what Do Revenge is! Kidding. But I will be honest, it does have a bright aesthetic and a head-rocking soundtrack. I'll give them that. If you haven't seen this film yet, I, being the kind person that I am, will summarize it for you.
The Life and Struggles of a 17-year old with Bipolar Disorder
Trigger Warning: This article contains references to suicidal tendencies and risky behavior. To be honest, I sometimes wish that the gist of bipolar disorder could be described exactly by the philosophical concept of Yin and Yang, or even be simply explained as being happy one day and sad the next. Unfortunately, that is not the case. On some days, I wake up elevated, energized, and pumped up- jampacked with energy to run 35 miles at 4 AM along with some post-workout calisthenics and weightlifting.
Why we need a new SNCC to tackle today's burning injustices - IPRA Peace Search
In early 1960, Ella Baker had the presence of mind, social networks and credibility to bring together mostly young Black people from across the nation who had participated in the early movement for a “Youth Leadership Meeting.” This meeting would quickly lead to the formation of one of the most critical organizations in our nation’s history, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, or SNCC.
Forestville Teachers Continue to Be Disrespected After Strike Vote and Fact-Finding Hearing
By Erik Olson Fernández On Monday, June 24th, Forestville teachers made their case at a Fact-Finding hearing, the last step in the legal process before a strike, while the District continued its questionable practice of hiring attorneys and outside consultants to find ways to not give the sixteen teachers in the district respect and a living wage.
Guest column: Killing wolves truly should be the last option
A-A+ The Bulletin recently reported on the status of Oregon’s wolf recovery. The top-line numbers showed cause for celebration. But a deeper dive shows another public agency that has lost its way. Exactly 124 wolves have been counted in Oregon. That’s 123 more than just a decade ago. But imagine if there were only 124 salmon, deer or eagles in the state. Would we be declaring mission accomplished, arguing for trophy hunting and making it easier to kill them?
