Suing and Spewing
The Clean Power Plan, or CPP, was finalized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, on August 5, 2015, and establishes the first-ever standards for carbon emissions from power plants. The CPP will help the United States reduce the pollution that causes increased global temperatures, rising sea levels, and other effects of climate change.
Scott Pruitt Threatens Reproductive and Environmental Justice for Women
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt has recently been embroiled in ethical questions related to luxury travel, excessive security expenses, and other misuses of taxpayer funds. Amid these worthy concerns, however, a dangerous aspect of his work has flown under the radar: his continued prioritization of polluters and corporations at the expense of women and their families. This disproportionately affects women of color and their reproductive health.
The Trump Budget Is Full of Giveaways to Coal and Oil Companies
This week, the Trump administration released its proposed budget for funding the federal government in 2019. With extensive cuts to health care, schools, scientific research, and nutrition assistance, Americans across the country would suffer under this proposal. However, there are some clear winners who would benefit from the Trump budget, particularly, the fossil fuel industry.
Resilient Midwestern Cities - Center for American Progress
The Midwest is known as America’s heartland and breadbasket, home to the Great Lakes. Despite the constancy of these iconic images, however, cities across the nation’s central region are adjusting to a new normal: more frequent and intense storms; heavy downpours; heat waves; and cold snaps. These dangerous effects of climate change hit hardest in low-income communities and communities of color, where residents confront daily the symptoms of historic inequities.
EPA is asking a climate denier think tank for help recruiting its ‘red team’
The Environmental Protection Agency has asked the Heartland Institute, a D.C.-based rightwing think tank that denies the human causes of climate change, to help identify scientists to join the agency’s so-called red team-blue team effort to “debate” the science of climate change, according to the Washington Examiner. The move is part of EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt’s efforts to undercut established climate science within the agency.

The Trump Budget Will Worsen Climate Change While Hurting the Most-Affected Families - Center for American Progress
Throughout his campaign, President Donald Trump referred to climate change as a “hoax.” And now, along with 180 members of Congress who question the legitimacy of climate change or humans’ contributions to it, he is undercutting progress toward limiting greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to warming our planet. At the same time, he is pursuing budget cuts that will make climate change even worse while hurting the families struggling most with its effects.
Trump’s Budget Woefully Underfunds Critical State Environmental Agencies - Center for American Progress
On Thursday, the Trump administration released a proposed budget that will hamstring the ability of the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, and state environmental agencies to implement and enforce environmental and public health protections. President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress have promised to pass a budget that espouses values of federalism and emphasizes state governance.
Who’s Pulling the Strings on President Trump’s Anti-Environmental Agenda? - Center for American Progress
In his first weeks in office, President Donald Trump’s approach to energy and environmental policy has favored the symbolic over the substantive and the transactional over the visionary. Whereas Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush each outlined broad energy plans in their first days in office, Trump put forward no energy policy ideas in his first address to a joint session of Congress.
The Oil and Gas Companies Suing to Pollute Without Limits
In 2013, the Obama administration announced the Climate Action Plan to “protect our kids’ health and begin to slow the effects of climate change so we leave a cleaner, more stable environment for future generations.” Now that President Donald Trump—who has called climate change a “hoax”—has entered the White House, the Climate Action Plan is in jeopardy. Components of the Climate Action Plan are already under attack.
How Exxon Won the 2016 Election
In its annual report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC, in 2014, Exxon Mobil delivered a sobering description of its condition. Oil prices were falling below $100 per barrel, costing the company an estimated $350 million in earnings for every $1 drop in the price of a barrel of oil. The company had recently been forced to abandon a multibillion-dollar deal to drill in the Russian Arctic because the Obama administration imposed sanctions on the Russian government.
Donald Trump is Mucking Around in the Koch Swamp
As of December 12th, 236 people have joined Trump’s transition team to fill 242 positions. Of those 236 people, 72 are associated with the conservative billionaire Koch brothers. This means almost a third of Trump’s team is part of the Koch’s elitist establishment that Trump promised to distance himself from when he was campaigning. As the President-elect forms his administration, he’s already failing to follow through on the promises he made to his supporters.
The Costs of Climate Inaction
Cyclists ride past debris piled along on the seawall road in Galveston on September 14, 2008, after Hurricane Ike hit the Texas coast. One of the most visible and immediate ways climate change has affected—and will continue to affect—Americans is through extreme weather exacerbated by rising global temperatures.
Trump Tests Climate Change Denial Against Public Opinion, Real-World Impacts – ThinkProgress
As the presidential election builds to a crescendo, extreme weather has brought climate change as an electoral issue into focus. Florida is facing its first hurricane landfall in a decade, resulting in the National Weather Service issuing its first-ever storm surge warning. At the same time, Louisianans are just beginning to clean up the damage from deadly August floods.

Exhaust rises in front of piles of coal at NRG Energy Inc.'s W.A. Parish Electric Generating Station in Thompsons, Texas, in March 2011.
Rising to the Challenge
Cities are at the epicenter of climate change, responsible for as much as 80 percent of heat-trapping emissions and enduring the brunt of climate change’s effects. Unlike the polarized debate on climate change at the national level, American mayors are calling for carbon-pollution reductions and increased resiliency efforts to avoid the potential catastrophic effects of climate change.
