Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing for Hemp Connoisseur Magazine print edition.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Why yes, I have.

How is social media changing news?

Vastly, immeasurably, irretrievably.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Can I have two? Bridget Jones and Clark Kent!

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means being thoughtful and honest.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I love a well-crafted pitch that is not too long, gets to the point quickly, and has all the facts straight.

What's your favorite social network?

Mmmm...

Who do you wish followed you?

Tom Robbins! But seriously, I'm not sure, really. So many people are doing such compelling work.

Why did you become a journalist?

Words matter.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I was proud of interviewing author Tom Robbins!

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Get nimble and stay curious!

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

A pitch from a PR rep claiming their person had written a law that they did not in fact, have any part in writing. So easy to check. Ugh.

What's your favorite drink?

Iced coffee!

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Taking a walk or doing some yoga.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The New Yorker.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That everyone who writes about cannabis and psychedelics is a lazy stoner and chronic zonker.
