Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
In high school, I worked as a stringer for The Fruita Times, in my hometown of Fruita, CO. Sadly, the paper closed last year.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
YES! My grandmother had an old, black and white typewriter that even had a ribbon that turned my fingers black. I loved it.
How is social media changing news?
News is becoming more immediate, more accessible and more prevalent. Unfortunately it hasn't become more accurate or better-quality.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Either Gregory Peck courting Audrey Hepburn in "Roman Holiday" or Phillip Seymour Hoffman in "Almost Famous." Or Anchorman Ron Burgundy. Hah!
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means sharing interesting, important stories with readers that matter to them. Accuracy, good judgement and ethics are paramount.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I'm usually the one pitching the story so this seems odd to think about. I prefer email and I'd like to receive pitches I can sell!
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I'm a Mac person so anything along those lines… My iPhone suffices in a pinch but I love my Nikon camera and I always have a notebook/pen.
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook.
Who do you wish followed you?
This is like asking who I'd like for a stalker. Weird question.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I love stories. I love telling stories. And I love meeting people who share their stories with me.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Ah yes, I was the editor of the Fruita Monument High School Catalyst back in the day.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I organized a four-day series of stories about the anniversary of a wildfire that killed 14 firefighters. It was poignant and meaningful.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Always be polite - you never know who you're talking to. And never be afraid to double-check facts or spelling of names. Accuracy is vital!
When's the best time to pitch you?
When I'm not busy with another story! Just kidding. Anytime is fine. Just know that I'll get back to you ASAP.
