Ypsilanti Township gets a new Beauty Block of businesses
In Ypsilanti, a commercial block filled with women and women of color-owned businesses is being promoted as “The Beauty Block.” Located at Ridge Center, 2925 E. Michigan Ave in Ypsilanti Township, these businesses aim to support and cross-promote one another as they continue to grow their establishments. Established in 2009, Original Moxie is the longest-standing of the three current Beauty Block businesses. However, it didn’t move into the Ridge Center until February of 2023.

Ypsilanti Community School district to recieve $42.2 million to pay off debt
A $114 million plan will pay off the debt of the Ypsilanti Community School (YCS) district as part of the $615 million spending bill, House Bill 4292, passed by Michigan lawmakers. After the State House’s approval on Nov. 2 and a signature from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the YCS school district will have its remaining debt and outstanding school bond loan fund balances paid off after receiving $42.2 million of the total $114 million in funding.

Eastern Michigan University’s Digital Divas program is returning for its 13th annual Digital Divas STEM Conference. Hosted by EMU’s extended programs and the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, the conference takes place on Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. With over 600 confirmed attendees, the event will focus on Michigan’s semiconductor industry and explore how it plays a significant role in the world’s economy.

Eastern Michigan University's new visual podcast, “Enlighten U, " is addressing students' mental health. The first episode, aired on Sept. 15, can be found on all major platforms including EMU’s YouTube channel. Around America, students in every educational institution are facing a mental health crisis, according to mental health professionals.
E|Dining reported for health violations in campus facilities
Inspections by the Washtenaw County Environmental Health details this year’s recent health violations for Eastern Michigan University’s E|Dining establishments. The inspections revealed both minor and severe violations. A report on March 28 details four violations at EMU Eastern Eateries Cluck. One of the violations included evidence of rodents. “Observed mouse droppings on the floor in the corner of the store room by the single use container rack,” the document stated.

Despite Ypsilanti’s heated temperatures, students at Eastern Michigan University enjoyed a day out in the sun during the school’s Commuter Cookout event on Aug. 5. Organized by EMU’s E-Dining and Campus Life, the event aimed to connect commuter students to the university’s on-campus experiences. “When talking to students on campus, we’ve noticed that many commuters just come and leave after classes,” Greg Richards, director of marketing for E-Dining, said.

Wall painting event at EMU raises awareness for sexual assault
The Women’s Resource Center, Title IX and Sexual Assault and Rape Awareness (SARA) are painting the walls between Pray-Harrold and the REC/IM to bring awareness to sexual assault on Eastern Michigan University’s campus. The event takes place April 17 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with paint and supplies being provided. All students are welcome to attend. The event was first originated by members of SARA last year. After a successful turnout, the organization found it would be beneficial to have it again.

Eastern Michigan University’s Black Alumni Association (EMUBA) is creating scholarship opportunities to support African-American students in their financial and professional needs. Former EMU student Brittni L. Brown got together with EMUBA to create the Brittni L. Brown Book scholarship. This scholarship would support African-American undergraduate students pursuing journalism and public relations. These are two fields that currently have a low percentage of African-American employees.
