A driving force to accelerate drug development
Fostering academic clinical research is one of the ESMO’s priorities, and artificial intelligence may be a major driver Advances in diagnostic technologies and a deeper understanding of cancer biology have unlocked new opportunities for anticancer therapies in recent years. To sustain momentum, the global cancer community must unite to find strategies to optimise the drug development journey.
Optimising cancer care for individual patients is key to improving outcomes for all
An ESMO roadmap addresses how the new challenges in oncology can be transformed into opportunities for the benefits of oncology professionals and patients with cancer This year, ESMO turns 50. Fifty years of education, science dissemination and collaboration; of relentless commitment to improving cancer care; of evolving alongside a field that has transformed beyond recognition in the past decade alone. Should rare cancers still be (in) a niche of oncology?
A new approach to rare cancers is needed to give patients better chances of benefitting from the current wave of therapeutic innovation. Today, the detection of certain genetic alterations in the tumour DNA, which can occur in various cancers regardless of their organ of origin, is increasingly a determining criterion in choosing the right course of treatment, especially for patients with metastatic disease.
ESMO endorses joint editorial from health journals on climate crisis
Over 200 leading health journals, including Annals of Oncology, published a joint editorial urging governments to take actions to limit global temperature increases, restore biodiversity, and protect health. Today medical, nursing, and public health journals across the world have simultaneously published an editorial calling for world leaders to take emergency action to transform societies and limit climate change, restore biodiversity, and protect health.
Prevention, the key to make cancer care sustainable
Cancer prevention Medical oncologists have traditionally played a marginal role in helping drive the adoption of preventive lifestyles, “but now it is time to strengthen our commitment” says ESMO President Prevention has long been outside the scope of oncologists’ training and professional skills, but new knowledge about mechanisms of cancer causation coupled with concerns about the long-term sustainability of oncology care may call for greater involvement of oncology professionals in...
