Photo by Xae | The Signal Rob Lanier and his Georgia State Panthers secured a victorious start to their conference campaign Thursday evening, defeating the UT Arlington Mavericks 83-77 at the GSU Sports Arena. Hawks claim the bragging rights in 104-79 win over the Golden State Warriors
It was a battle of “epic” proportions between two four-win teams at State Farm Arena Monday night, as the nearly unrecognizable Golden State Warriors came to town. It would be the Atlanta Hawks (5-16) that claimed the bragging rights, though, winning 104-79. When the league schedule was released a couple of months ago, this was a mouthwatering fixture. However, injuries derailed the Warriors’ season, and the Hawks entered the contest on a 10-game losing streak.

Photo by Matt Siciliano-Salazar | The Signal The Georgia State Panthers struggled to move the football throughout much of Saturday night’s contest in Statesboro, ultimately falling 38-10 to bitter rivals Georgia Southern. A rookie and a veteran: How Vince Carter can help De'Andre Hunter flourish
Losing sucks. I think anyone who reads this can agree with that simple statement. The Atlanta Hawks lost a heartbreaker to the defending champion Toronto Raptors, 119-116 at State Farm Arena Saturday night. With a record of 4-12, the Hawks find themselves in the dungeon of the Eastern Conference, tied for last place with the lowly New York Knicks. While the Raptors clawed their way back to send the sellout State Farm Arena crowd home unhappy, a quiet, shy hero is beginning to emerge.

Vazha Shubladze and the anatomy of an injury
Vazha Shubladze dropped his racket, pumped his fists and celebrated like he had just won Wimbledon. With his 6-3, 7-6 victory over the University of Florida’s Johannes Ingildsen, the sophomore claimed a spot in the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regionals. Just last semester, Shubladze underwent knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus and missed months of action. The realization that his body had unfortunately failed him was tough at first.
What does the NCAA’s decision on the name and likeness controversy mean for upcoming legislation in Georgia?
On Oct. 29, the NCAA reversed its stance prohibiting student-athletes from profiting off their names and likenesses. During a meeting at Emory University in Atlanta, the NCAA Board of Governors unanimously voted to change its rules and allow its student-athletes to begin profiting off themselves by 2021.
Summerhill: Georgia State’s downtown expansion
Three years since the Atlanta Braves moved from Turner Field to SunTrust Park in Cobb County, the area surrounding the team’s former ballpark has become bare. Apart from Saturday night football games at what is now Georgia State Stadium, foot traffic though the Summerhill area off the Downtown Connector is largely nonexistent.
Atlanta Hawks struggle, fall 113-93 to the Chicago Bulls: Here is how it happened
That was a rough one. Do we even need to talk about it? The Chicago Bulls (3-6) shut the Hawks down and got themselves back in the win column Wednesday night, winning 113-93. For the Bulls, six players finished the game with 10 or more points. Tomáš Satoranský led the way, as he scored 27 points and flirted with a triple-double, recording seven assists and eight rebounds. The Czech international put together a rare offensive masterclass. The Bulls beat the buzzer twice in the contest.
Trae Young and Jabari Parker dominate in 108-100 victory over the San Antonio Spurs
What a fourth quarter. Looking to end their three-game losing streak, the Hawks stepped back onto the State Farm Arena floor and faced off against Gregg Popovich and his San Antonio Spurs, ultimately winning 108-100. Trae Young made his return from the ankle injury which kept him out of last week’s contest against the Miami Heat. The guard struggled early, as he tried to shoot himself back into rhythm, but began to heat up in the second half.
Hawks struggle without Trae Young, fall 106-97 to the Miami Heat on Halloween night
A Trae Young-less Atlanta Hawks hit the hardwood Halloween night, looking to rebound from a two-game losing streak. Tyler Herro and Kendrick Nunn ensured that was not to be the case, as the duo combined for 45 points and helped their squad to a comfortable 106-97 win. Without Young, Thursday night’s game was all about communication on the floor. “With Trae being out, one of our main leaders, I think communication is key,” Reddish said pre-game.
“We get boogie, baby.” Kane Williams is ready to step into his new role and help Georgia State men’s basketball claim more silverware
“We get boogie, baby,” Kane Williams said with a beaming smile across his face. The junior guard was discussing the upcoming season and why students should be ready for the show, regardless of the fact that the team recently lost some of its better players, including D’Marcus Simonds and Malik Benlevi. “If [students] want to see some wins [and] have a good time, come to the third floor [of the GSU Sports Arena],” he said.

How will the Panthers fare on the hardwood this season?
Basketball season is upon us. Let’s talk about it. On the men’s side, the Ron Hunter era is over. After the coach accepted the head coach position at Tulane University, Rob Lanier, former assistant coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, is now at the wheel. Coming off their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the new-look squad will be hoping to match last season’s excitement and ultimate glory.
Georgia State falls 2-1 in thrilling encounter against arch rival Georgia Southern
On Saturday’s Fan Appreciation Night at the GSU Soccer Complex, Georgia State men’s soccer played host to a thrilling encounter against the Georgia Southern Eagles. Although head coach Brett Surrency’s men were the dominant side for most of the 90 minutes, it was Georgia Southern who claimed the 2-1 derby-day victory, after a 90th minute goal broke Georgia State hearts and handed the Panthers their second successive loss.
The players have spoken: The NCAA system needs to change
Until now, no Georgia State student-athlete has spoken on record about this topic. The Signal spoke with four athletes, current and former, who shared their opinions on the controversial topic. Penny Hart, a former Georgia State wide receiver, graduated in 2019 and was signed to the Indianapolis Colts before a pre-season injury. During his time at Georgia State, Hart felt as though he and his teammates were under a constant spotlight.
From player to coach: Shawn Elliott talks football
Shawn Elliott is drenched in sweat. His Georgia State squad has just finished up a key training session in the heat of Georgia “fall,” as they prepare for the Homecoming game against Arkansas State. Prior to taking over as the Georgia State head football coach in 2016, Elliott built quite the resume around the sport he’s had a love affair with for most of his life.
Offensive masterclass helps Georgia State record 52-38 win over Arkansas State

Photo by Unique Rodriguez | The Signal On a much-needed cooler, windy evening in Atlanta, the Georgia State Panthers entered Saturday’s Homecoming game in desperate need of a win. Coming off defeats to Western Michigan and Texas State, the Arkansas State matchup was arguably a must-win.
How motivation can help you achieve your dream body
An old soccer coach once told me, “Espen, you need to treat your body like a Ferrari: Sure, you exercise a lot now, but if you don’t eat right, think of it as putting s—– gasoline into your dream sports car.” He was right. I never quite understood what he meant until the summer of my freshman year at Georgia State.
Georgia State Football’s Twitter Suspended
Georgia State’s football Twitter account was suspended early Sept. 19 due to a copyright claim. If you’re searching for Georgia State’s football Twitter account, you’re out of luck. The team’s account was suspended from Twitter in the early morning of Sept. 19 after a copyright complaint was filed against a video they posted last year.

Paul Tyson and Frank Rosenwald: The Englishmen
We’re changing things up a bit on this week’s Lunch With. On this installment, no food is involved. Instead, my guests played a bit of football — that’s the real football, by the way — and chatted about their careers and lives at Georgia State. My guests this week are Paul Tyson and Frank Rosenwald. Tyson is the starting goalkeeper and Rosenwald is a starting forward and midfielder on the men’s soccer team.
Defense folds in Western Michigan blowout

Photo by Michael Pascale | The Signal The Panthers will hope for a bit of amnesia to kick in next week, as the Western Michigan Broncos ran them out of Kalamazoo, Michigan on Saturday, winning 57-10. The Broncos’ running back tandem of LeVonte Bellamy and Sean Taylor proved to be the difference. The pair ran for a combined 282 yards and five touchdowns in the first half alone, ultimately finishing with 330 yards.
Lunch With Dave Cohen
It is that time of the week again, ladies and gentlemen, and it seems like pizza may become a mainstay on this series. My guest is longtime Georgia State broadcaster Dave Cohen. I was also joined by Anfernee Patterson, a member of my sports team at The Signal who was with me in Knoxville for that historic victory. We met up at a Broad Street favorite of mine, Rosa’s Pizza. Like Reuben’s Deli, I can always feel at home when inside Rosa’s.
Georgia State struggles early, but overcomes Furman shootout
Georgia State relied on a record-setting performance by Dan Ellington to survive against the Furman Paladins 48-42 in front of a packed house at Georgia State Stadium. “It has been an incredible seven days,” head coach Shawn Elliott said. “It was a total team effort, even though it was not sharp.” Mirroring Georgia State’s start against Tennessee last weekend, the Paladins began the game strong, looking to send an early message.
Lunch With Mike Holmes
On this week’s Lunch With, I sat down with Mike Holmes, the associate athletic director of sports communications at Georgia State. We met up at Junior’s Pizza, a new pizza joint in Summerhill, just a couple of blocks away from Georgia State Stadium. As a proud New Yorker, restaurants like Junior’s are a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine. Give me a couple of slices of pepperoni pizza, and I am always happy.
Shocky top: What we learned from Georgia State’s shock victory
Christian Owens flexes sideline after the last touchdown for Georgia State during their first winning game versus the University of Tennessee at Neyland Stadium. Photo by Matt Siciliano-Salazar | The Signal In case you’ve read this far and still don’t know, the Georgia State Panthers defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 38-30 at Neyland Stadium Saturday. The upset shocked the nation, stunned those in orange and white and brought the Georgia State Football program a thick stack of cash.
Senior midfielder finds success on the field and in the classroom
Photo courtesy of Josh Ellis For midfielder Brooke Shank, 2019 has plenty of potential. The senior has been a standout on the women’s soccer team ever since her arrival in 2016 and hopes to cement her legacy within the program, while also performing at a high level in the classroom. The Cedar Park, Texas native has experienced a lot in her first few years in Atlanta. The chance to study and compete in the downtown area has been an enjoyable one.

Photo by Matt Siciliano-Salazar | The Signal The travelling fans in blue and white celebrated like they had just won the Super Bowl. The players, in a state of euphoria, could barely contain their joy. Just last season, the team was 2-10 and looked lost. Today, they had just pulled off the impossible and defeated the Tennessee Volunteers in their own home. The underdogs could not have asked for a better start.
Lunch With Superfans
My first guests are Sherill Moss and her husband, Joe Lawson, who made sure to dress head-to-toe in blue and white. Not only have they been football-season ticket holders since the team’s inaugural season in 2010, but basketball-season ticket holders as well. They have been in attendance for some of our program’s most historic events, from R.J. Hunter’s miraculous three-pointer against Baylor to the football team’s 2017 Cure Bowl triumph. We sat down at Atlanta’s own, The Varsity.
Football incorporating HelmetFit this season
When the Georgia State football team takes the field this season, you may not notice anything new about the player’s helmets on the outside, but on the inside, a new fitting technology may help limit the number of head injuries the players will inevitably face. Head equipment manager Nate Simon has been busy this off-season. Each helmet the football team uses, including the helmets worn throughout this summer’s training camps, now function with the help of HelmetFit.
Vazha Shubladze: from Georgia to Georgia State
With a team-best record of 9-6, freshman star Vazha Shubladze has been a standout on this year’s men’s tennis team. Hailing from Georgia – the country, not the peach state – his story is the kind that makes us all proud to be Georgia State Panthers. Maybe you are unfamiliar with his home country. Geographically speaking, it is an eastern European nation located on the Black Sea, sharing borders with Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Panthers split Day of Duals 1-1
The Georgia State beach volleyball team split their matches at the Day of Duals Tuesday, finishing 1-1. Head coach Beth Van Fleet was happy with what she saw from her team on the sand. “I was really proud of how we fought, Van Fleet said. The results have kept the No. 18 Panthers four games above .500, with their record now standing at 9-5 on the season. No. 2 USC, L, 4-1 Georgia State went toe-to-toe with the No. 2 ranked USC Trojans but fell by a score of 4-1.
Bold Predictions for Liverpool's Crucial Week | isportsweb
The week ahead will be a critical one in Liverpool’s early season. A massive Champions League night at Anfield awaits on Wednesday, as the Reds host Spartak Moskva. A win will see the Reds through to the next round as the group champions, but the Russian side will be hoping to spoil any party. Then, a Sunday Merseyside Derby will wrap up the week.
New York Knicks: Early Highs and Lows | isportsweb
The New York Knicks have enjoyed an above average start to their 2017 campaign. Kristaps Porzingis and co have certainly surprised a few, combining an offense capable of scoring big numbers with a defense more than capable of holding teams out. But this exact Knicks team has not been present every night. In addition to the early highs, there have been some typical lows and straight up embarrassing moments for Jeff Hornacek and his team to ponder.
The Player/Tactical Switch Liverpool Needed | isportsweb
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has struggled to make his presence felt since his summer switch from Arsenal. The England international had found his opportunities hard to come by, until recently. Having started in Liverpool’s last two matches (all competitions), Chamberlain has finally given Jurgen Klopp the selection dilemma he needed.
3 Reasons the Knicks Can Continue Impressive Form | isportsweb
The Knicks are 6-5 (6-2 in their last 8). Not quite what we all expected after their abysmal pre-season and opening three games. But this team has the looks of something special. A young, driven group of players led by a unicorn the world has never seen before. And you know what? They can keep this up. Here are three logical reasons this New York Knicks team may just continue to shock us all. Nothing more really needs to be said. Porzingis is the real deal and a blessing for the city of New York.
The Reason, Other Than Defense, Liverpool Are In Trouble | isportsweb
Liverpool’s result on Sunday was more than disappointing, it was a harsh reality check that this team is not good enough to challenge for a top four spot, let alone the title as it stands. Tottenham, a team Liverpool has consistently dominated over the years, suddenly looked miles ahead in class. And Liverpool’s defensive line was not the only reason for the result, that is an easy excuse at this point. But it is funny to compare the two.
Knicks Season Preview: An Honest Prediction | isportsweb
The Knicks will open up their 2017/2018 season on Thursday night in Oklahoma City. After finishing their preseason 0-5 with the league’s worst defensive rating and lowest assist-to-turnover ratio, one can only wonder what this regular season has in store for them. Carmelo Anthony is gone, waiting to torch his former employers in the season opener. The drama surrounding Phil Jackson has vanished, but if the preseason has anything to say about things (it rarely does), big problems still remain.
Player Ratings From Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United | isportsweb
As has been the common case in recent years, Liverpool had to endure another frustrating day out on the pitch against their bitter rivals, Manchester United. Jose Mourinho’s men sat deep, absorbed Liverpool’s constant pressure and were more than happy to walk away from Anfield with a share of the points. For Jurgen Klopp and his team, however, it was another match they so desperately craved to win, only to come up short as Martin Atkinson blew for full time.
World Cup Qualifying: Crucial Monday For Iceland, Wales | isportsweb
For Iceland and Wales, two nations that shocked the world during their darling Euro 2016 runs, Monday represents a crucial day in their nations’ respective footballing histories. Thanks to their 3-0 victory over Turkey, mixed with Croatia’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Finland on Friday, Iceland sit atop Group I with a two-point buffer over Croatia. Iceland control their own destiny. Win against Kosovo tomorrow in Reykjavik, and the team will qualify for their first ever World Cup.
