Why does Europe need a digital euro? Supporters of the plan offer various rationales. These include independence from American payment providers, security in case those American providers cut off access, the convenience of digital cash, now that notes and coins are used less, and offline sales. But there is a bigger and better reason: monetary sovereignty and the credibility of the euro itself. The European Central Bank needs to be the anchor for all euros, digital included.
