Esther Kalu’s Biography

Hi, I'm Esther Kalu.

The first time I read a newspaper, I wanted more than anything to have a byline there.

At the time, I thought & still think journalism is one of the most significant careers in the world.

What beats being able to disseminate important information, be the watchdog of society, document human experiences & lead critical conversations on issues?

Journalism became a passion I was willing to pursue and I did.

After discovering it, I was stuck with the dilemma of deciding what beat to write on. This led to shuffling across metro, education, business, culture, politics & general news.

Through these beats, I realised that nothing excites me more than writing about culture—films, art, music, and lifestyle. That's why I’ve been on it for the longest.

I love the thrill of curiosity that pushes me to look for the next culture story.

I enjoy the human angle it offers to storytelling and its universal depth to life, art, music and film.

I simply love culture journalism. It is both a curse & a blessing.

Aside from (culture) journalism I fancy: screenplays, poetry, journals, newsletters, social media content and copywriting.
