What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a reporter at my college newspaper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, I learned to type on a typewriter. I think my class was the last one at my high school to learn typing on a typewriter.
How is social media changing news?
News is more immediate, and it's not set in stone. The story changes with interviews and other facts that inform what we know.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
My favorite fictional journalist is Lois Lane.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I usually prefer pitches by email.
What's your favorite social network?
I like Twitter.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
We didn't have a high school newspaper, but I worked as a member of the Yearbook staff, which was the closest I could get.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't give up. It doesn't usually happen overnight.
What's your favorite drink?
I like coffee.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
I am always at my computer, but I might also be reading a book or going for a walk in spare moments.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I think the most common misperception is that I write about just one topic or one industry. I do the research and I work to know the facts.
