NC State football welcomes Cal on Saturday for first game post-Doeren
Dave Doeren might not be the guy standing at the podium doing post-practice interviews, but his spirit is still part of the N.C. State football team. The Wolfpack hosts California this weekend — its first home game since Wake Forest rolled to a 38-14 win on Oct. 10 — as the program looks to snap a two-game losing streak. It’ll certainly be different, but the mission remains: Go 1-0 on Saturday. That’s what Doeren would’ve said.
Duke is loaded with talent. What we learned after 3 exhibition basketball games
It might sound like a crazy question but can a basketball team have too much talent? Coaches would scoff at such a thing. But there are only so many minutes to be parceled out to talented players who all want to be on the court. Which brings us to Duke. The Blue Devils are loaded. Look up and down the Duke roster and there are 12 players, any of whom likely could start this season for ACC teams, or anywhere else. All wanted to play at Duke.

Halloween house gets the green light. Raleigh officials say they will close streets and allow the city’s famous Halloween house to host its annual party after all. NC State releases statement on football team, four days after firing Dave Doeren
The silence is over. Sort of. N.C. State on Wednesday evening released a statement from Chancellor Kevin Howell and Athletic Director Boo Corrigan. The statement addressed the university’s decision to fire head football coach Dave Doeren on Saturday, following the team’s loss at Stanford. Doeren spent nearly 14 years with the Wolfpack. N.C. State also fired defensive coordinator DJ Eliot, it announced Sunday.

With Halloween three days away, the city said Wednesday that it will close the streets around the popular spooky house in Oakwood, clearing the way for a party that draws upwards of 5,000 trick-or-treaters. For more than a decade, attorney and former NC State football player Jesse Jones has spent more than a month decorating his Oakwood Avenue home with 20-foot monsters, animatronic zombies and a live deejay, drawing crowds from around Raleigh by the busload.

NC State basketball starts next week. How much is the school paying opponents?
Both N.C. State basketball teams are shelling out funds for nonconference opponents, paying game guarantees for nine home games apiece. This is standard practice among Power Four programs, who often offer financial incentives to lower-level opponents. The men’s basketball team is paying out the most between the two programs. N.C. State is expected to pay roughly $745,000 to 10 teams; nine in the regular season and one exhibition opponent.
What Philip Rivers told an Alabama reporter after NC State fired Dave Doeren
Will he or won’t he? The answer to that question remains to be seen. Philip Rivers is a reported contender for the N.C. State head football coaching position after the program fired Dave Doeren this weekend. Rivers is the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, a position he’s held since March 2021.

The Wolfpack’s football program was turned upside down this weekend. NC Gov. Josh Stein boosts fellow Democrats campaigning ahead of Election Day Original
Election Day is just over a week away, and Gov. Josh Stein is on the campaign trail helping fellow Democrats. Stein isn’t on the ballot — his term doesn’t end until 2028 — but in the past several days, he has joined Democratic candidates who are running in this election. This past week, he held a news conference about affordability with two Democratic incumbents — Rep. Dante Pittman and Sen. Kandie Smith — and other Democratic candidates hoping to take some Republican-held legislative seats.
NC State football needs a new coach. Who are some of the intriguing prospects? Original
It’s been a long time since N.C. State had to make a football coaching hire. It’s a lot more complicated these days, with the transfer portal, revenue sharing and the ever-changing landscape of college football. N.C. State fired Dave Doeren on Saturday, less than 24 hours after the Wolfpack lost to a struggling Stanford team on the road. Now it’s tasked with finding a new leader. There are plenty of options, but not all of them are necessarily created equally.
N.C. State’s Dave Doeren has been fired as the Wolfpack’s head coach. It was time Original
N.C. State fired head football coach Dave Doeren Saturday, and there’s no doubt it was time. Probably a little past time, if we’re being honest. A lot of Wolfpack fans would tell you that, and I’d agree. Doeren’s 14-year tenure could be maddening to N.C. State supporters — never quite bad enough to get fired, but never quite good enough to get to 10 wins or to an ACC championship. A typical Wolfpack season under Doeren went like this: A 7-5 overall record. A 4-4 conference record.

Athletic Director Boo Corrigan announced the decision on Saturday night, following the Wolfpack’s stunning loss to Stanford.

NC State fires head football coach Dave Doeren after 14 seasons. What we know Original
N.C. State Athletic Director Boo Corrigan sat courtside during the men’s basketball exhibition game against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday afternoon. Corrigan was mere hours removed from his return to Raleigh, following the football team’s disastrous loss at Stanford, exhaustion written all over his face. When asked by reporters at halftime whether he had a minute to speak, Corrigan simply said, “Nope,” turning to walk toward the team tunnel. He returned after halftime and watched the rest of the game.

It was over before it really began. Lenoir-Rhyne scored the first field goal of the game to take a two-point lead against N.C. State, but that lasted 80 seconds. The Wolfpack tied the game within 16 seconds of play on a pair of free throws, before Paul McNeil made the team’s first 3-pointer and gave his squad a lead that only grew.

Scheyer’s team looks like the real deal If Tuesday night in Cameron was any indication, Jon Scheyer has a national title contender on his hands.

No. 2 Duke basketball rolls to impressive exhibition win over No. 8 Tennessee Original
It seemed more like, say, an NCAA Elite Eight matchup Tuesday as No. 2 Duke hosted No. 8 Tennessee at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils rolled to a 103-64 victory and look more than ready for the real season to begin. The intensity shows. There’s a willingness to share the ball on offense, crank up the pressure on defense and not let up. The Volunteers, with Rick Barnes beginning his 12th season as coach, loaded up in the portal and have the look of a team that can contend for an SEC title.

How gratitude shaped Paul McNeil’s return to NC State, approach to the season
Reporters clamored around Paul McNeil’s table at ACC Tipoff in Charlotte, where they held recording devices, cameras and lights. Everyone wanted to talk to the guard who stayed home — twice. The junior returned to the Wolfpack for a third season, despite testing the waters in the transfer portal. He also returned to the Wolfpack, where he will play for a third coach in three seasons. Staying after Kevin Keatts’ firing was admirable.

How Duke football can bounce back after two tough fourth-quarter ACC losses
After the first quarter Saturday, with North Carolina dismantling Duke, it seemed improbable the Blue Devils would finish the rivalry game with better numbers in most areas. But the Devils did. Duke had more yards in total offense, were 8-of-18 on third-down plays, forced more turnovers and had more possession time. And lost. And lost because the Blue Devils, for a second straight week, could not hold a fourth-quarter lead after fighting like crazy to get it.
