January 9: Buying up the Land
European settlers arriving in what today is North Dakota faced many challenges as they homesteaded or otherwise tried to obtain land. Some difficulties included working this unknown land, living in areas that could be isolated, and trying to persevere through difficult weather. On top of this, some also dealt with legal issues relating to the land. In 1915, the Dickinson Press reported on a lawsuit involving a man from the Belfield area.
Class 3A, Section 4 championship: Mahtomedi blanks Hill-Murray
While Hill-Murray played its way back to the section final, Mahtomedi had a chance to rest and entered Thursday’s game needing to win just one game to win the tournament. The rest allowed the Zephyrs to bring out one one of their best pitchers, Max Strecker, in game No. 1. He kept Hill-Murray at bay, especially in the first four innings when he allowed just one baserunner. “They were behind on my fastball and early on my changeup,” Strecker said.
Goalie Tandem Gave Boston Jr. Eagles a Boost During 2022-23 Season
Ask the Boston Jr. Eagles a few years ago if they thought they would be playing at the 2023 Chipotle-USA Hockey National Championships, and their answer wouldn’t have been the same as this year. But in 2023, thanks to their goalie tandem of Annabelle Aitken and Sophia Luoni, the Boston Jr. Eagles embraced a new identity and made an impact in the Girls Tier I 14U division. In two seasons, Annabelle and Sophia posted impressive numbers.

Nashville Jr. Predators Win Girls Tier II 19U Championship With Intense Comeback
While teams never want to go behind, especially in national tournaments — Nashville was down 1-0 in the semifinals and 2-1 in the quarterfinals — having a star player like Ajakie on the ice helps overcome those hurdles. “We haven't seen that Heather for a lot of the season,” Singletary said. “We know that she has the ability to do it and I think that this tournament and getting to where we've gotten, she was always a huge contributor and everything that she did for our program.
Arizona Bobcats Overcome Tight Second Period For 18U 2A Title
The Bobcats set the tone early. “The first shift, we had really good puck movement,” Cote said. “We ended up scoring, and that just set the bar really high for (Nashville). We kept up the pressure and had a good rush all game long.” Jason Hammett came up big throughout the title game for Arizona. After assisting on both of Cote’s early goals, he got another helper on Ryan Jim’s second-period goal that made the score 3-1. Then, Hammett sealed it with a power play goal with 40 seconds remaining.
Rochester Grizzlies Cap Off a Perfect Season with 18U Championship
Yet, the Grizzlies were able to hang onto the one-goal advantage all the way to the final buzzer. “We really just played for each other, and we played for the crest,” Russo said. “We’ve all been together for a while, so we never wanted to be done playing and here we are now. “This is pretty much our second year [together] and we’ve all been together on different teams before.
Sun Valley Suns Win 18U 1A Title With Flurry Of Goals
Elsbree was right, as the Suns outscored their opponents 9-3 in third periods throughout the tournament. All of Sun Valley’s preparation and organization paid off at the end of their season, which saw the Suns win their state championship just weeks before taking the national title in Maple Grove. It was all business for Jenson and his team at nationals, but even his usually stoic players let the emotions all pour out as they realized the title was theirs.

Photo Gallery: Northfield vs. Lakeville North “We needed (Bowlby’s goal),” Panthers coach Buck Kochever said. “That brought this team right back up. We came back with a great second period and then we hung on. . . . The girls worked so hard, and they persevered.” The momentum, which had fallen decidedly in Northfield’s favor after Puppe’s power-play goal at the end of what had been a rough and mostly evenly-played first period, reversed course with Bowlby’s shorthanded score.
Top games: Bagley/Fosston, Kittson County Central meet in battle of top point producers
Edina, ranked No. 2-2A, has been on a roll ever since game No. 4 of the season. Its section-rival Wayzata has been near the top all season, too, and these talented hockey teams will clash one more time before the playoffs. But Edina grabbed a 3-0 lead early thanks to a three-point night from junior Jackson Nevers.

Wayzata rolls past St. Michael-Albertville
Forward Brooks Gengler attempts to obtain a rebound for another offensive chance against the St. Michael-Albertville goaltender. Photo by Drew Herron, SportsEngine Something peculiar is happening in Wayzata. The bread and butter that was, the ultra-structured style of play that relied on defense, grit and denying an opponent’s use of its strengths has been overshadowed. A looser, free-wheeling vertical style of attack has taken over, and boy is it working.

Brad Childress: the unheard football success story
You hear it from fans, people in sports media and just about anyone who has an opinion on the matter. Coaches, especially head coaches, who are successful in college typically struggle to find that same magic in the NFL. From Chip Kelly and Nick Saban to the infamy of Urban Meyer’s recent stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars, some of the upper echelon of college head coaches have fallen majorly flat at the next level and now we see less and less of these transitions for fear of the same failure.
Solarpunk: The Power of an Aesthetic
BY ETHAN OLSON Art by Jessica Kamman Imagine a city of the future. Are there flying cars, cities with buildings taller than mountains, robots at every corner? Or is the world of your imagination one torn by conflict, struggling to survive amidst increasingly hostile climate change? There are two common perceptions of the future in popular culture.
Saint Paul-based, Full Circle Theatre is attempting to bridge the political gap
The saying, “Art imitates life” has been applied to many different genres over the years, but in the case of Full Circle Theatre this idea has been taken very literal. In times like we live in today, sometimes people don’t stop to listen to the other side of the argument, and we become caught in a single way of thinking. However, this type of listening is not an easy skill either because let’s be honest, most of the time we just want to be right.
A new era: the Timberwolves begin resurgence under new management
Timberwolves fans had all the reason to be excited about their team’s future at the start of this NBA season. Exemplified by the $1.5 billion deal done by Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore to acquire the ball club, this season is the beginning of a new era in Minneapolis. However, even the most passionate Wolves fan wouldn’t have expected a start quite like what has occurred on the court in the first two weeks of the 2021 NBA season.
NBA Regular Season Preview: Timberwolves Turning Up The Ante
It’s been an offseason full of twists and turns for the Minnesota Timberwolves, from a new regime under former MLB star Alex Rodriguez’s ownership, to the swift release of now former President of operations, Gersson Rosas. There has been a great deal of turnover in the front office these past few months, however in terms of what the Timberwolves have to offer on the court, the fans just may have something to get excited about after all.
Timberwolves President Fired after being caught red-handed with coworker
Timberwolves fans were stunned on Wednesday, Sep. 22 when Director of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas was relieved from his position, just two years into the job. This came after what many would consider a successful period for the ball club, partially due to the selection of Anthony Edwards in the 2020 NBA Draft who was a close contender for the rookie of the year award that eventually went to Charlotte Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball last year.
With Minnesota Star Running Back Out for the Season - How PJ Fleck can Reload His RB Room
Every Minnesota football fan who watched the Gophers play Ohio State on the Gophers’ opening day collectively cringed when star running back and team captain Mohamed Ibrahim went down with an injury in the third quarter, unable to continue in the game and now the season (and quite possibly his college career).

As city workers began their work on the clearance on the corner of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, taking away blockades such as city barriers and portable toilets.
Diving into NFC North draft selections: the Winners, the Losers and the Inevitable?
It was an all-around good 2021 NFL draft for the NFC North, even if some storylines were less than favorable for some, including those in the camp of the Green Bay Packers. With Aaron Rodgers’ future with the franchise up in the air, their picks were under very heavy scrutiny during the draft from fans.
Former University of Minnesota professor takes shot at integrity of football program & PJ Fleck
On May 10, WCCO Minnesota ran a story alleging that there has been emotional and physical trauma involved in University of Minnesota football practices under head coach PJ Fleck, causing several former players to either be forced to medically retire or quit the sport due to mental health reasons. The Gopher community responded to both WCCO and the ex-professor who started this narrative, and it’s fair to say the argument went pretty one-sided from the outset.
Who’s in: Looking at the ever-growing Gopher basketball squad (so far)
Ever since new head basketball coach Ben Johnson was first brought in to the University of Minnesota on March 22, Gopher fans knew that the program was due for a rebuild and man, did they get one. Since the departure of Richard Pitino many of his players followed suit, looking for new pastures after a dismal Big Ten season that saw the Gophers go from ranked 16th in the country, to the bottom of the Big Ten.

On April 10, the season for Class 3A basketball in Minnesota culminated with a fiery display from perhaps the most highly-touted team in the entire state, Minnehaha Academy, as they worked their magic against the major underdog story in Alexandria, beating the Cardinals 80-29. With this 51-point win, Minnehaha Academy takes its fourth state title in four years, winning the 2017, 2018 and 2019 titles.
Former Gopher Ben Johnson named new head coach of men’s basketball program
University of Minnesota Athletic Director Mark Coyle happily announced on Monday, March 22 that the successor at head coach for the men’s basketball program, following the firing of Richard Pitino, would be Gopher alumni and former player, Ben Johnson. A surprise hiring for many, Johnson most recently comes from the Xavier basketball program, where he was an assistant coach for the last three years.
With Pitino potentially on his way out, who’s ready for the hot seat?
A less than impressive season has come to a close for Golden Gopher basketball, and many fans are calling coach Richard Pitino into question. Although Pitino is still under contract through the 2023-24 season, there is still potential for the long-time coach to be replaced. This could happen if the University decides to go in that direction and if the money works out, which is never a given in a time like we are living right now with the Covid-19 pandemic.
March Madness tournament build up - Do the Gophers make the cut?
With just a handful of games remaining in the Big Ten basketball regular season, heads are turning towards the impending March Madness tournament but for the Golden Gophers, making the tournament might not be so simple. The Gophers have not been making the selection process an easy one for themselves lately, winning only three of their last 11 games at the time of this article being published, albeit one of those wins coming against now 3rd-ranked Michigan.
Gophers rout Cornhuskers as they look to stay in the hunt for March Madness
The Golden Gopher men’s basketball team, who was previously on a bad stretch of games losing five of their last six, found no problem with their Monday night matchup beating the now 4-10 Nebraska Cornhuskers 79-61 in Minneapolis. Team engine Marcus Carr put up a convincing 21 points as well as eight assists and even picked up a couple of steals. Even more impressive, Carr got all of this in only 19 minutes, his lowest tally of the season by over 10 minutes.
Three Gophers in Tampa Bay with a similar goal: Bring pride back to Minneapolis
Minneapolis-born, rookie wide receiver, Tyler Johnson made headlines for his game-deciding play in the NFC Championship game on Jan. 24, although it was for all the reasons that one wouldn’t expect. In the dying embers of the NFC Championship game, frigid Lambeau Field was rocking, even though there were roughly only 6,000 fans in attendance.

Ali Weisz competes for the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit on Dec. 9, 2020. Alison Weisz made her Olympic debut as a shooter last summer in Tokyo. Golden Gopher football woes continue with heartbreaking loss to Iowa
Golden Gopher football has gotten off to a start that has probably surprised more people than not. The Gophers currently sit at 1-3 and are 6th in the Big Ten West, three games behind first-place Northwestern (I know, what?). Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the poor start has been the actual play on the field, which for the most part has looked uninspired and lackadaisical. One major difference between this season and last season’s major success is the efficiency that the offense created.
Treatment of LSU football players shows true colors of current NCAA climate
When the NCAA board of governors voted unanimously to, “allow student-athletes to be paid for the use of their name, image and likeness,” on October 29, 2019, many among the world of college athletics saw this as a massive step in the right direction. However, the more recent events involving the Louisiana State University (LSU) football program, LSU alumni Odell Beckham Jr, and the NCAA has shown that we are still yet far from any justice that our college athletes need.
Big Ten football returns without tailgates: students react
With the return of Golden Gopher football just days away, University of Minnesota students are scrambling to find ways to celebrate this momentous occasion. However, students will be without at least one option with the university putting a strict ban on tailgating for this 2020 football season. In an attempt to cut down on large gatherings due to Covid-19, there will be no tailgating outside of TCF Bank Stadium at all this season, according to Gopher Athletics.
Waiver wire watch: gone with the Lind-say
Week five of the NFL season was one full of surprise performances from a few players maybe you haven’t heard of unless you are an NFL analyst or a very unfortunate fantasy football player. Either way, there will no doubt be thousands of fantasy football GMs drooling over these players, and it is my job to tell you whether or not you should be. These are the players you really should be looking at this week.
