Eugene Katchalov: The two most important words in live poker
Eugene Katchalov has live tournament earnings of close to $10M, having collected numerous wins on the European Poker Tour, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker, among others. It’s been a few months since my last PokerOrg column, when I looked forward to the upcoming World Series of Poker (WSOP). As I said at the time, it’s a very special series, but even so I think I ended up enjoying the 2025 WSOP even more than I thought I would.
Eugene Katchalov: The greatest poker show on Earth
Eugene Katchalov has live tournament earnings of close to $10M, having collected numerous wins on the European Poker Tour, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker, among others. I still remember the first time I visited the World Series of Poker. It was 2004 and I was in Las Vegas for a vacation with friends. I’d started watching poker the year before — the WSOP and WPT — and so I was excited just to see it live, with my own eyes.
Eugene Katchalov: Poker, games and gamers
Eugene Katchalov has live tournament earnings of close to $10M, having collected numerous wins on the European Poker Tour, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker, among others. What happens when a hobby becomes a job? No one starts off in poker as a pro; we learn it with family or friends, as a game played primarily for fun.
Eugene Katchalov: Picasso and the art of the donk bet
Eugene Katchalov has live tournament earnings of close to $10M, having collected numerous wins on the European Poker Tour, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker, among others. In any field of life, when someone comes up with a novel approach it can be jarring and difficult to comprehend. The true measure of innovation comes afterwards, as what seemed confusing or strange becomes accepted, understood, and imitated.
What celebrity alive or dead would you stake in a poker game?
For the longest time, I was convinced I'd give my cash to Glenn Frey who played more hours on the road with Eagles than anyone could imagine. But then I ran across this Dan Rather interview with the legend Willie Nelson, and it became immediately clear that--as long as he's playing in his game in Maui--Willie can play my roll. He explains in the video below. Meanwhile, who would you choose?
Is the Mike Matusow documentary worth watching?
I rented the Matusow documentary on Amazon Prime. Cost me $2.95, and I feel fine saying I got my money's worth. What the film lacks in production and well-crafted narrative, it makes up for in behind-the-scenes access and explanations for lots of stories we've only known bits and pieces about in the past. I won't spoil them all, but one too-short moment in the documentary gives an explanation for why Matusow and 2004 WSOP Champion Greg Rayer were at odds.
Eugene Katchalov: The trouble with thinking
Eugene Katchalov has live tournament earnings of close to $10M, having collected numerous wins on the European Poker Tour, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker, among others. In his first exclusive column for PokerOrg, Eugene reflects on the meditation retreat he attended prior to last month’s WPT World Championships, and the importance of finding space in one’s life to stop and think. Last month I played the WPT World Championships at the Wynn.
Should we create a poker tour for the older generation?
The other day I posted on X: "Hear me out: Too Old For This Shit Poker Tour. Shuffle up and deal at 9 a.m. bag 'em at 5. Winner gets the coveted TOFTS gold coffee cup. I would never miss an event." If I were to really do it, I think The Early Bird is a great name for it. The trophy can be a bird eating a worm! The Early Bird Poker Tour championship trophy

The Road Out of Kyiv
The night before Russia started the war, my friends and I met to come up with a plan. None of us really ever thought Kyiv, where we lived, would fall. At worst, we figured there would be some sort of staged terrorist attack in the city to get the government to capitulate, but we decided to have our most important things ready anyway: passports, marriage certificates, cash, watches, jewelry. I got home around 1 a.m. on Thursday.
