Renowned Flutist Eugenia Zukerman Shares Importance Of Music Since Her Alzheimer’s Diagnosis
By Liam MartinJanuary 10, 2022 at 6:02 am BOSTON (CBS) — For decades, Eugenia Zukerman delighted audiences as a flutist and shared the stories of others as the music correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning. Then, two years ago she shared her own story: a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, with a lyrical memoir ‘Like Falling Through A Cloud.’ “Nothing lasts forever, not kale or tomatoes or cucumbers or the glorious flowers that fill our fields or the people we adore,” Zukerman read from one of her poems.
I Have Alzheimer's Disease—Here's What It Has Been Like Living With a Terminal Diagnosis for the Past 3 Years
Diagnosed in 2018 at the age of 74, I have learned quite a bit about coping with this insidious disease and want to share my experience. My hope is that it will be of help to you, whether you are suffering from memory decline or are the caregiver of someone with memory decline. I've had a busy life. I have toured the world as a flute soloist, and I've appeared regularly on television as the arts correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning.
The worst way to treat a loved one with memory decline
Recently we had dinner with two of our longtime friends. For this article, I will call them Ralph and George. These two men have been married for over fifteen years, living happily together. We often dine with them, and the conversation has always been jovial and interesting. Ralph over the past year has begun to show signs of cognitive memory loss, possibly Alzheimer’s disease. I, too, have been diagnosed with the disease.
Making a Change on a Dark Dreary Day
Source: Tina Nord via Pexels Even though the difficult year of 2020 has finally passed, we are all now faced with the reality that not everything is going to magically get better overnight. After the tumultuous transition of power in Washington, to the continued news about new COVID strands, to worrying if we will be able to get our turn for a vaccine, things can feel, well, bleak.
How Poetry Helps Me With my Alzheimer's
I have it. The “disease.” Alzheimer’s. I’ve been dealing with it for nearly four years. It is not fun. Well, I suppose that isn’t always true. It’s actually a bit funny at times, if you can believe that. And fun stuff is what I’ve always gravitated towards, like music and writing -- especially poetry. All of which I rely on now more than ever. So here is how poetry has helped me with this demonic situation, and made it a bit more bearable along the way. First of all, I’m a musician.

Like Falling Through a Cloud: Coping with Forgetfulness, Confusion, and a Dreaded Diagnosis by Eugenia Zukerman
A few years ago my daughters told me they were worried about my forgetfulness, my loss of words, my confusion. They suggested… or rather insisted… I get tested. A flutist, writer, artistic director, busy playing and performing, I simply refused. But when l finally agreed to trek uptown with my younger daughter to a hospital to be tested, I was shocked that indeed it turned out that my cognitive ability was compromised and would only get worse.
To Those in Long-Term Care Facilites During COVID...
I can’t imagine anything worse -- lying in a bed, confused, frightened, feeling abandoned and helpless. As someone with early Alzheimer’s disease, I can't help but think about what it would be like to be a patient in a long-term care facility during the Coronavirus lockdown.

How Playing Music Has Helped Me With My Alzheimer's
About four years ago my daughters told me they were worried about my forgetfulness, my loss of words, my confusion. They suggested, or rather insisted I get tested. I was indignant at first, but I gave in. After being tested I was shocked that indeed my cognitive ability was compromised, and would only get worse. I had Alzheimer's. When I got back to my apartment I sat down at my desk and stared at the wall for what seemed a very long time. I did not cry. I did not move.
I Have Alzheimer’s
Warning signs. Some three years ago my daughters noticed that I seemed confused, baffled, and demonstrating a loss of memory. They insisted I get tested. I was annoyed and in denial, but I gave in and ultimately went to be evaluated. Once I understood that indeed I was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, I went home to my apartment, sat down at my desk and stared at the wall for what seemed to be a very long time. I did not cry. I did not move.

The enchanting history of Ben Franklin’s glass armonica
Benjamin Franklin may have helped give birth to a new nation, but the glass armonica was the Founding Father’s “most cherished creation,” according to English professor Carey Mead. Best known as a statesman and a scientist, Franklin had a deep appreciation for the power and beauty of music. In fact, music was his passion and joy, and Mead’s new book, “Angelic Music,” resonates with that enchantment.

Jazz giants like Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith can be found playing and singing at clubs packed night after night.
