Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I reviewed theater for a small print mag in New York City in 2005.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I asked for a typewriter for Christmas when I was 8 years old and was inseparable from it for the next 10 years, until the world went digital
How is social media changing news?
Social media has allowed ordinary citizens to interact with news figures, giving them a small chance of influencing history in some way.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Stephen Colbert
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To be a historian of the human condition and experience.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#GAMA. Not funny ha-ha.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I'm just happy the editor thought of me in the first place. But generally e-mail is preferable.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
The internet, once in a while the voice recorder on my cell phone. I'm not fancy.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram - it's like Facebook, without the running commentary.
Who do you wish followed you?
Simon LeBon.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I had something to say.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I didn't; I was too intimidated by the other students. As far as I know, none of them are journalists today.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I loved a story I did on World's Best Comfort Foods for CNN.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Do your homework and don't make the rookie mistake of accepting stories that are out of your depth.
When's the best time to pitch you?
When you think that I might be the right journalist for your piece.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
After years of pitching editors, any time an editor pitches me, I'm over the moon.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I dislike it when third parties ask me to write pieces for one of my clients.
What's your favorite drink?
I tell people "water" but, really, it's... water.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Giving lectures on diction and phonetics at the language school where I teach courses on language acquisition.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Lucky Peach, The New Yorker, McSweeney's
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That we're "paid to travel the world" and "sent" to destinations by our publication.
