St. John’s council has busy final meeting of 2024 – The Independent
St. John’s city council brought down its 2025 budget Tuesday, to the tune of $349,151,881. Mil rates, both residential and commercial, will stay the same in the capital city over the coming year, but there will be a small increase to the water tax. Residential properties will see an annual increase of $15 while commercial properties will see an increase of 2.2 per cent. Coun. Ron Ellsworth, council’s lead for finance, said the water tax increase will offset higher costs of providing the service.
Inuit call on federal government to end to postal strike Original
Inuit governments and the national advocacy group for Inuit rights are calling for an end to the Canada Post strike. They say the stoppage of mail services is disproportionately impacting Inuit communities across the north. Both Nunatsiavut Government in Labrador and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), the national organization representing Inuit across Inuit Nunangat, say the strike is having far-reaching impacts on Inuit since Canada Post is the only mail carrier service in much of the north.

Firefighting services are returning to the Wabush Regional Airport, but local politicians say it isn’t going to be easy to get the services back up and running. Transport Canada pulled the service from the airport in 2020, citing low passenger volume. At the time, the local MHA and the town’s mayor fought the decision to no avail. But according to a social media post by Labrador MP Yvonne Jones, the service will be reinstated this month.

Medical patients say air travel delays a regular part of healthcare experience Original
Residents of Labrador’s north coast are sounding the alarm on what they say is a frustrating and broken system of air transportation for medical appointments. With no roads connecting the remote Inuit and Innu communities to the rest of the province, air travel (or ferry service during part of the year) is the only way to get to medical appointments. But some are facing travel delays, missing work, and missing appointments, they say, due to unpredictable and unreliable transportation.

St. John’s city council started its meeting on Nov. 26 by announcing it was ratifying a new collective agreement between the City and IAFF Local 1075, which represents local firefighters. The union voted Nov. 13 to accept the four-year agreement, which gives incremental raises to the firefighters each year at a total cost of just over $2.84 million. Coun.

A proposed transitional housing facility that has been a point of contention among residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is going ahead, according to the MHA for the region. Perry Trimper, who represents Lake Melville, told The Independent the brakes had been put on the facility until a recently released report on policing in the area was completed. “We will be moving ahead with that very soon in terms of the permit applications and other planning,” Trimper said.

New affordable housing in central Labrador welcomed, but waitlist still long
The imminent opening of 16 new affordable housing units in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is welcomed news to many, but locals say the community’s housing needs are still great. The City of St. John’s bi-weekly council meeting started off a little more formal on Nov. 12, with the swearing-in of newly minted Ward 3 councilor Greg Noseworthy. Report highlights components of Innu healing – The Independent
Healing and health can have a lot of different meanings to different people. It can mean spiritual, physical, emotional, or social health, all of which can be damaged and require healing. For the Innu of Labrador, health is all-encompassing and each part can’t be treated as a separate thing. This is one of the thrusts of a presentation representatives of the Innu Round Table Secretariat gave earlier this week at the 18th International Congress on Circumpolar Health in Halifax.

St. John’s council had a shorter-than-normal meeting this week, partly because some of the more contentious items had already been discussed at length in recent Committee of the Whole (COTW) meetings.
